Ricki Lake Said Lucille Ball Was One Mean Broad
When I get old, I plan on being the tough old bird who has the lights off at Halloween and who only smiles when the pool boy tops off my glass of 10am Chardonnay. Yes, I plan on being Kathie Lee Gifford in my later years. Someone who sounds equally as fun is Lucille Ball. Her show may have been I Love Lucy, but Ricki Lake snitched that Lucy didn’t share the sentiment. Ricki met Lucille at the 1989 Academy Awards, and she says Lucille was not that very nice!
Page Six says Ricki was – where else? – onWatch What Happens Live earlier this week, and a viewer wondered what it was like being part of that “The Stars Of Tomorrow” bit at the 1989 Oscars. Lucille introduced with Bob Hopethe bit that also included people like Patrick Dempsey, Christian Slater and Blair Underwood. She seemed pleasant enough for that! See for yourself:
Well, Ricki says backstage Lucille was not one to be messed with. She was chain smoking and not pleased to be there:
“She wasn’t very nice — ‘salty’ is putting it mildly. She was not nice. She was smoking a cigarette, and we were in this cardboard green room. I mean, I was pinching myself.”
Ha! I can imagine Lucille staring Christian in the eye and saying he’ll go nowhere. Hey, that’s not mean. That’s just uplifting motivation from a crow who has been around the block! Kids these days are so soft!
Ricki continued that Lucille wasn’t specifically mean to her but that she did die shortly after the Oscars. I mean, I imagine I’d chain-smoke and bully Christian Slater if I had the Grim Reaper hanging over my shoulder, too!
