Amy Schumer Wants Maroon 5 To Cancel Their Super Bowl Halftime Performance

Amy Schumer has joined Rihanna‘s side for the fight that is “HELL NO Super Bowl LII”, sparking a celebrity boycotting of the sporting event. A few days ago RiRi reportedly turned down the chance to play at the Halftime show, citing her support of Colin Kaepernick as the reason. The NFL read her loud and clear, and ended up going with one of the most lukewarm bowls of uncontroversial musical oatmeal Maroon 5. Amy is not here for Maroon 5 or anyone else taking part in the fuckery that is the Super Bowl, so she’s calling on Adam Levine and others to join her in a boycott.

Amy’s stepped her toe into the football ring two days ago when she posted on Instagram a newspaper headline of RiRi’s blowing off the Bowl (the only bowl RiRi’s been known to turn down so readily) with the flip comment:

The post blew up, so Amy, complete with a still from her Friday Night Lights satire (God, how I miss that show! I wish someone would revive it from the dead or at least offer FNL‘s resident band Crucifictorious the Super Bowl gig) posted a followup offering way more insight to her thoughts on the matter, including nods to her own white privilege and how she had already told her people not to include her in any Super Bowl ads.

Friday thought. I wonder why more white players aren’t kneeling. Once you witness the truly deep inequality and endless racism people of color face in our country, not to mention the police brutality and murders. Why not kneel next to your brothers? Otherwise how are you not complicit? I think it would be cool if @maroon5 backed out of super bowl like @badgalriri Did. I personally told my reps I wouldn’t do a Super Bowl commercial this year. I know it must sound like a privilege ass sacrifice but it’s all i got. Hitting the nfl with the advertisers is the only way to really hurt them. I know opposing the nfl is like opposing the nra. Very tough, but don’t you want to be proud of how you’re living? Stand up for your brothers and sisters of color. And the hottest thing a guy can do is get down on one knee. Not to propose but to reject the treatment of his teammates by this country. Anyone who says its disrespectful to our military please read up on the fact that a lot of veterans are proud of what @kaepernick7 is doing and fully support him. What are your thoughts?

For their part, Maroon 5 are supposedly pissing themselves to take the gig, and Cardi B.’s name has been thrown out as someone who may make a special appearance to perform “Girls Like You” during the set. It’s still early days and a lot can happen between now and February 3. Let’s ALL take a knee and pray and that the boycott is so strong that the head honchos at the Super Bowl have no choice but to offer Janet Jackson the headlining spot with Justin Timberlake as her whipping boy getting wardrobe malfunctioned by Ms. Jackson one inch of clothing at a time on stage. Only then will some of the balance of the NFL Halftime Universe begin to be restored.
