Eddie Murphy Will Star In A Movie Inspired By “Grumpy Old Men”

Eddie Murphy has got a lot of mouths to feed and tuition to pay so he’s getting back on his grind. His last big movie was 2012’s A Thousand Words and he’s had like 12, 13 kids since then (ok 2, but who’s counting besides his accountant). According to Deadline, Eddie’s next project will be a movie that’s “inspired” by Grumpy Old Men and will be produced and directed by Jim Story who makes money hand over fist with movies like Ride Along and Ride Along 2 (Ride Along 3 is in post). Also Think Like a Man and Think Like a Man Too. Not to mention Fantastic 4 and Fantastic 4: Rise of the Silver Surfer. I don’t know about you, but I’m sensing a pattern.

No plot details are forthcoming but if it sticks closely to its inspiration, it will be Eddie and some other brother squabbling about nothing until they spot a hot woman (20 to 30 years their junior) to squabble over instead. That’s the plot of the original starring Jack LemmonWalter Matthau and Ann-Margret.

No sidekick has been cast opposite Eddie yet either, but apparently Samuel L. Jackson’s name has been kicked around. Sam’s just wrapping up Shaft which was also directed by Jim. Eddie’s got a blaxsploitation movie in the can as well. He plays Rudy Ray Moore in Dolomite is My Name.

Neither Eddie or Sam seem old enough to be Grumpy Old Men but it turns out that Sam is roughly the same age Jack Lemmon was when he was in the original (Jack was 68, Sam is 69. Walter was 73). Eddie is only 57 but as we know, he’s never let his physical limitations stop him from playing any damn character. Considering the fact that we’ve seen both actors do old man makeup before (Eddie in Coming To America and Sam in Django Unchained and Black Snake Moan), I’m going to assume that they’re going to go very broad with this and hit both actors up with a shit-ton of cotton balls.
