In an Ellen episode that airs tomorrow, Mel B was on to promote her upcoming memoir Brutally Honest. But the conversation turned to the news from The Sun that she’s checking into a British rehab center next month. Even though The Sun’s source was Mel B herself, she says that the information got a little twisted, and she’d like to clarify why she’s actually going to rehab.
The primary reason for Mel’s rehab trip is to deal with the PTSD she claims she was diagnosed with during her extremely messy split from her now ex-husband Stephen Belafonte. She also claimed that she had issues with booze and sex, but that those were symptoms of the larger PTSD problem. When she was asked about it by Lea Michele (who had stepped in to host the show in Ellen DeGeneres’ absence), she explained that the booze and sex reason was “a little bit skewed.”
“I’ve been in therapy since my father got diagnosed with cancer nine years ago. My therapy changed a little bit because I was in a very intense relationship, which you can all read about in my book. I do address a lot of those issues. But you know, no, I’m not an alcoholic. No, I’m not a sex addict. I was with the same person for 10 years and that was quite a turmoil, very intense…But yeah, I address a lot of those issues and I did kind of have to ease my pain. And I do suffer a lot from PTSD.”
One of Mel’s friends, Gary Madatyan, spoke with Entertainment Tonight on Tuesday, and he also said that she’s not a sex addict and is a great mother to her three daughters. Gary also casually mentioned that people don’t really know what she went through, but it will be more clear if you read her book. I don’t know if Gary also held up a copy of Brutally Honest when he said that, but I’d like to think he did.
Mel B is probably going to relax some more after her appearance on Ellen. It probably took all of Mel B’s jaw strength not to call Lea out on a lie as she was gushing about how her 9-year-old self would die to meet Scary Spice. Wannabe wasn’t even released in the US until Lea was 10. Lea, today you graciously thank Mel B for not being brutally honest with you.
