There’s Going To Be A Game Show To Pay Off Your Student Loan Debt

TruTV must have looked at that tone-deaf Handmaid’s Tale wine and said to Netflix, “Hold my beer.” There’s no bigger bitch in the world than Sallie Mae, the source of many a drained bank account and who would probably rob a Girl Scout cookie collection box if it meant I’d make my payment on time. For once. Oops. Anyway, because Americans owe upwards of $1.4 million in student loans (and I’m $1.2 trillion of that), someone thought it would be a good idea to come up with a game show where people could pay their loans off. Yeah, because that sounds fun to watch.

NBC says Paid Off was inspired by how 60% of college graduates are walking around with just under $40,000 in debt. Contestants will be asked trivia questions, and if they get enough right, they could have up to 100% of their debt paid off. Hoo lawd, time to re-learn the capitals of every country to try and pay off a few semesters! Michael Torpey from Orange Is The New Black is hosting it, and he tried to say they’re just being funny about a bleak as fuck situation:

“We’re playing in a weird space of dark comedy. As a comedian, I think a common approach to a serious topic is to try to laugh at it first.”

Hahaha, yeah, and wait for next fall when NBC decides to send the homeless through the American Ninja Warrior obstacle course in a chance to put a roof over their heads! Check out the trailer:

People are naturally a little outraged that people are trying to turn plight into entertainment. Michael says they’ll be super respectful by urging viewers to call their government representative to do something on student loans since the debt is keeping twenty-somethings from buying houses, being middle class, and breathing. OK, maybe that last one is just a “lucky” few of us.
