Drake Used His New Album To Admit He’s Got A Son

Welp! The cat baby is out of the bag: Aubrey ‘Drake’ Graham is a father to an 8-month-old son. On his new album, Scorpion, released last night, the artist formerly known as Wheelchair Jimmy who branded himself as the rapper you could bring home to mama, came clean about knocking a girl up. This cup of tea is unfortunately a bit cold, because Pusha-T already brought this kettle to a boil back in May when he alleged that Drake is a deadbeat dad. I guess Drake couldn’t wait until the release of his new Adidas line to tell the world about his son; or maybe he decided it was better to sell records than track suits? Which makes a person more money?

Vulture listened to the whole album so I didn’t have to (I’m not listening to a rap album unless it’s by a woman) and there are two specific call outs to the child on Scorpion. In Emotionless Drake raps:

“Look at the way we live / I wasn’t hiding my kid from the world, I was hiding the world from my kid… From empty souls who just wake up and look to debate / until you staring at your seed, you can never relate… Breaking news in my life, I don’t run to the blogs / The only ones I wanna tell are the ones I can call / They always ask, ‘Why let the story run if it’s false?’ / You know a wise man once said nothing at all.”

That’s deep. Rich man knocks a girl up and doesn’t want to expose the child to press for the child’s well-being? Drake is a Saint. That’s how we do it in Canada; even our rappers are mostly-polite. He continues to discuss baby (allegedly named Adonis) on the track March 14 rapping about potential custody issues with the baby mama, how he wishes he wasn’t a single father, and how he only raw-dogged the girl two times even though his mom Sandi Graham told his ass all it takes is one. Shoulda listened to Sandi:

“Yesterday morning was crazy / I had to come to terms with the fact that it’s not a maybe / That shit is in stone, sealed and signed / She’s not my lover like Billie Jean, but the kid is mine / Sandi used to tell me all it takes is one time / Shit, we only met two times. Two times / And both times were nothing like the new times / Now it’s rough times/ I’m out here on front lines just tryna make sure that I see him sometimes… It’s breaking my spirit / A single father, I hate when I hear it… I got a empty crib in my empty crib / I only met you one time, introduced you to Saint Nick / He must’ve brought you like 20 gifts / Your mother saying you growing so fast that they don’t really fit but, man, you know / I still had to get it for my boy tho… Sorry, I’m venting trying to cover ground / They said in two weeks you’re supposed to come to town / Hopefully by the time you hear this, your mother and I will have come around instead of always cutting each other down / God willing / I got a good feeling.”

I respect that Drake is still trying to maintain his good-guy brand image through admitting to rawing a girl twice and physically seeing his child once. He has us picturing him wandering around his huge mansion, holding a tumbler of whiskey, silently staring at the empty crib where his baby should be, swirling the amber liquid in the glass as he weeps gently into his OVO sweater. Look at us sympathizing with Drake instead of his single baby mama! Jeez! This guy is talented!
