Stephen Colbert Gave Bill Clinton A Do-Over For His Disastrous “Today” About Monica Lewsinky And #MeToo

While there are plenty of modern-day assholes in power to take down a peg given the #MeToo/Time’s Up movement, we’re also going through our history books to be like, “Yeah, the dude was a creep.” Gird your loins, James Buchanan! We’re coming for your ass! I kid, but one name that keeps popping up is Bill Clinton, as nothing gave Donald Trump pleasure during the campaign trail than to hold a mirror up and say “I know you are, but what am I?” anytime the Clintons would say he was a real ass to women.

Bill was on Today yesterday and had a hissy fit when Craig Melvin questioned him about Monica Lewinsky. Last night, Bill went on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert to promote the book he did with James Patterson, and Stephen tried to toss the former president a life raft and mulligan his answer. You’d think Bill would have assumed he’d be asked about his handling of the Monica Lewinsky situation and would have rehearsed something fresh, right? Ehhhh…he kinda improved the second time around. I guess?

HuffPost says Stephen reiterated how tone-deaf Bill’s response was to Craig’s question when he said he was a victim, too, since he left the White House with a $16 million lawyer tab for fighting off those harassment charges and the push to impeach him out of office. Bill added that he doesn’t think Monica is owed a private apology from him. He also stressed how he had done so much for women over the years, which most people thought, “Yeah, gurl, but not in the way you’d talk about in front of your mother!” Anyway, Bill got a second stab at it:

Poor James Patterson. All he wants to do is talk about a thriller “written” by him and the ex-president and collect a check, and now he has to sit there for multiple interviews praying no ghost of ghostwriters past comes to haunt his ass.

For his part, Bill initially seemed to take a page from the Real Housewives reunion playbook and blame it on bad editing, but it seems like something in his ear was like, “You in danger, gurl, if you keep down this path.” He reiterated how he apologized to his family, Monica and her family, and lives with the consequences of his actions every day. Later in the show, guest Tig Notaro at least came to Monica’s defense to remind people she needs to stop being labeled the Hester Prynne in this 20-year-old scandal, which Monica seemed to appreciate while pseudo “I don’t know her”-ing Bill’s part of the show:

Earlier in the program, Bill also reiterated his support of the #metoo movement, adding, “Can we puhhhh-lease go back to shitting on Harvey Weinstein? He’s the real asshole here.” No, he didn’t say that, but those shifty eyes and nervous shifting of weight sure did!
