Samantha Bee Was Hoping People Would Pay Attention To Her Message Of Motherless Children, Not The C-Word

On Wednesday night, Samantha Bee felt the wrath of conservatives after calling Ivanka Trump a “feckless cunt” on her show while commenting on an Instagram photo of Ivanka. Samantha used the picture of Ivanka cuddling with her son to illustrate recent reports about children getting ripped from their mothers by US border agents. That was kind of the part Samatha was hoping we’d all be paying attention to.

Samantha received a Television Academy Honors award last night in Hollywood. Full Frontal honored for its coverage of the #MeToo and Time’s Up movements, and Women’s History Month. According to IndieWire, Sam used a part of her acceptance speech last night to talk about the c-word scandal that befell her show. She says she’s really passionate about the stuff she talks about on Full Frontal, and sometimes it takes her a bit too far.

“Sometimes I should probably have a filter. I accept that. I take it seriously when I get it right and I do take responsibility when I get it wrong. Stories about 1,500 missing unaccompanied migrant children flooded the news cycle over the weekend. So last night we aired a segment on the atrocious treatment of migrant children by this administration and past administrations…Our piece attracted controversy of the worst kind.”

She went on to say that everyone spent yesterday “wrestling with the repercussions of one bad word” when they really should have spent the day “incensed” that the nation is “wrenching children from their parents and treating people legally seeking asylum as criminals.” She added: “If we are OK with that then really, who are we?

The recent backlash obviously isn’t going to prevent Samantha and the Full Frontal team from speaking out in the future. She says:

“I can tell you, as long as we have breath in our bodies and 21 minutes of airtime once a week, repeats on Saturdays, that we as a show will never stop shouting [about] the inhumanities of this world from the rooftops and striving to make it a better place. But in a comedy way.”

Samantha already apologized on Twitter and explained why she said it. The White House probably won’t accept her explanation, and Trump certainly won’t.

I suppose Samantha could issue a second explanation regarding her language that they’d be sure to accept. Like saying she was just pretending she was delivering her monologue from inside of an Access Hollywood bus for Billy Bush.
