Kodak Fling 35!

The internet tells me that the Fuji Quicksnap ruled the disposable camera game in the 80s, because it was the first 35mm disposable camera. My response to that is, “I don’t know her.” I really don’t. This is the first I’m hearing of a stranger bitch named Fuji Quicksnap. Because in the 80s, the only 35mm disposable camera I knew (besides the generic ones) and used was the Kodak Fling 35. The Fuji Quicksnap came out in 1986, and a year later Kodak Fling 35 showed up on the corner of the disposable camera stroll and tried to give Fuji some competition. In my head the Kodak Fling 35 buried Fuji Quicksnap and became queen of disposable cameras. But well, Fuji Quicksnap is still around and Kodak Fling ain’t.

But while the Kodak Fling was around, it boggled minds with its technological advances. I’m talking about the little trademarked wheel on the front that allowed you to easily scroll to the next exposure with your thumb. (“When all of those words are put together, the sentence they form is foreign to me,” said every youngin’ who has no idea about life before camera phones.)

Even though the Kodak Fling featured a technical wonder like a scroll wheel, it only cost $6.99.

The Kodak Fling, and cheaper disposable cameras, were an important tool of my childhood. Sure, my mom’s still got film (some from a Kodak Fling, maybe) in her freezer that she needs to take to Thrifty (which doesn’t exist anymore) to develop, but still. With that being said, I’m so glad that we have digital cameras and camera phones now. I can only imagine all of the film processor employees who would throw themselves at me after developing a hole pic I took on my Kodak Fling to scan and upload to my Grindr profile.
