Open Post: Hosted By The Return Of Stefon To SNL

It feels entirely appropriate that on one of the messiest days of the year, one of the messiest characters to ever slide into the Weekend Update desk would make their return to Saturday Night Live. After almost three years since his last visit, Stefon came back last night to give the good people visiting New York City some expert recommendations on what to see and do on St. Patrick’s Day. You have probably already guessed that his recommendations don’t include sipping green cocktails and eating bottomless plates of potato wedges at the Applebee’s in Times Square.

I had to wonder where Bill Hader (last night’s host) would take New York’s most knowledgeable club kid Stefon upon his return. Stefon’s last official night on SNL had him running off to marry Anderson Cooper before changing his mind and choosing his one true love, Seth Meyers. Obviously the romantic in me wants to believe that Stefon and Seth moved to a big farm in the country to breed sheepdogs that look like Bruce Vilanch. To the surprise of no one, Stefon is still Stefon, by which I mean he’s still the gatekeeper to a world of questionable nightlife venues filled with living fever dreams.

Possibly my favorite part about Stefon’s return – aside from picturing what it would be like to hit the dance floor with Ireland’s hottest Farrahchauns (leprechauns who look like Farrah Fawcett) – was when Stefon introduced us to his equally weird attorney (and “conceptual piss artist“) Sky, played by Stefon’s co-creator John Mulaney. Shy only stuck around long enough to update Stefon on the most appropriate way to describe what a Human Squatty Potty is. But then I stopped and though: wait, Stefon has a lawyer? And he appears to have him on retainer? That’s a sign of success. Congratulations, Stefon – looks like you made it!
