“Grey’s Anatomy” Discard Sarah Drew Landed A Role In The “Cagney & Lacey” Pilot

I don’t think Sarah Drew’s going to be spending any time crying over spilled lactated ringers. Days after getting the axe from Grey’s Anatomy, Sarah’s just landed a lead role as a cop named Cagney. Yes, that Cagney. According to The Hollywood Reporter, CBS is making a pilot for a rebooted Cagney & Lacey because, who’s gonna stop them?

Wasn’t there a play called For Redheaded Girls Who Have Considered Reboots / When Rizzoli & Isles Is Enuf? Michelle Hurd who has been on Blindspot, Ash vs. Evil Dead and the TV reboots of 90210, Lethal Weapon and Hawaii 5-0 will be playing Lacey. Hopefully she will let Sarah sit with her at lunch and show her the ropes on her first day at Rehash High. THR says:

The reboot of the iconic 1980s show centers on two female police detectives and friends who keep the streets of Los Angeles safe. Tyne Daly and Sharon Gless originally played Lacey and Cagney, respectively, on the original series.

Drew, who has spent the past nine seasons on ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy, will play Cagney, an easygoing partner and protegee to Lacey. Hurd’s Lacey is described as athletic and polished, and a former high school track and field champion. She’s empathetic and straight-forward — and Cagney’s more experienced partner.

I’m sure it wasn’t fun getting fired from Grey’s but after nine years, Sarah must be somewhat relieved to explore other options. And a C&L pilot seems like a nice, low-stakes, low-commitment project to start with. Even if it does miraculously get picked up, there’s no way it’s running 14 seasons like Grey’s. If I’m wrong, I’ll eat my iconic wash-and-go lady cop haircut. #neverforget
