Mary J. Blige Says Working On “Mudbound” Cost Her Money
Mary J. Blige is going to the Oscars on Sunday with not one, but two nominations. She’s nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Mudbound, as well as Best Original Song for “Mighty River” (also for Mudbound). Sadly, being known as Two-time Academy Award-nominee Mary J. Blige is not an honor that has put much money in her pockets. According to divorce documents filed by Mary J. Blige and obtained by The Blast, her work on Moudbound ended up costing her money.
Mary and her soon-to-be ex-husband Kendu Isaacs have been fighting over money for months now. The latest drama is that Mary doesn’t want to pay Kendu spousal support, because she says she has no money to give him. Mudbound was a critically-acclaimed film, and Mary did two times the work on it (acting, and co-writing/performing the movie’s man song “Mighty River“). Unfortunately, she claims her expenses incurred during production far outweighed her salary.
Mary’s finances aren’t right in any capacity. She owes $25 million in advances that were given to her, she doesn’t own her music catalogue. She also argues she’s a “legacy artist,” and that there’s no market for her to go on a major world tour every year. Additionally, she’s $12 million in debt.
Mary also wants Kendu to get a job, but according to court documents, he claims he’s “unemployable.” As for her own job prospects, she claims movie and TV roles haven’t been that lucrative. I think what Mary is trying to say is that she’s making money, but she’s not making $30,000 a month in spousal support-levels of money.
It’s not known how much of Mudbound’s $10 million budget went to Mary’s salary. It’s also not specified what all those expensive expenses were. So basically, Mary got two Oscar nominations out of Mudbound, and that’s about it. Maybe wardrobe also let her keep those cool vintage sunglasses she wears in the movie. But if I had to guess what Mary’s expenses were, I’d say 10% of her salary went to an assistant hired specifically to wipe her down between takes. I felt grimy after watching Mudbound in the comfort of my living room, so I can’t imagine the places Mary J. was finding mud in while she was on set.
