Spain’s Tax Man Is Coming For Shakira

January 23, 2018 / Posted by:

Shakira’s hips may not lie, but it appears her Spanish tax filings do, and Tío Sam is coming to get his cut of her “She Wolf” earnings! Someone had to make that “hips don’t lie” joke.

BBC News and La Vanguardia report that Spanish authorities are investigating Shakira because they believe she was a resident of the country from 2011 to 2014 and therefore owes them tax money. The bill could be tens of millions of euros, so I guess we can expect a Shakira residency at Caesars Palace in 3…2… But sources say she didn’t commit tax evasion. They claim she was outside of Spain for most of that time. Someone go to your grandma’s bathroom, check out the yellowing stack of People Magazines from 2011 in the basket by the toilet, and check the celeb photos to see how many times Shakira popped up in Spain.

The Spanish government says that if you live in the country for more than six months out of the year, you better pay them taxes. Shakira has been with FC Barcelona soccer player, and the father of her two children, Gerard Piqué since 2010. She declared Spain as her place of residence in 2015.

The Spanish tax men are after four years of Shakira’s global income and not just the cash she made in Spain. Prosecutors could push for her to serve jail time and pay several dozen million euros. Shakira’s lawyer was quoted as saying that “as an international artist, she had lived in several places in the course of her professional life, acting in total accordance with the laws of all the jurisdictions she resides in.”

Shakira’s auditors PricewaterhouseCoopers confirm that there’s an investigation.

Okay, but who is going to audit PricewaterhouseCoopers’ work? They can’t even hand over the right Best Picture envelope, so how in hell are they supposed to figure out where Shakira was living in the fall of 2011?
