Wanda Sykes Says Netflix Offered Her Even Less Than Mo’Nique For A Comedy Special
Mo’Nique has recently called for a boycott of Netflix based on color and gender bias when they offered her a pittance ($500,000) compared to what they offered Amy Schumer ($11 million), Dave Chappelle ($20 million) and Chris Rock (also $20 million). While her boycott may not have gotten a lot of traction, a lot of people have thanked her for starting an important conversation. Wanda Sykes is one of those people. Wanda, who arguably has a much higher profile than Mo’Nique, says Netflix offered her even less.
Wanda tweeted:
.@moworldwide, thank you for speaking out. @netflix offered me less than half of your $500k. I was offended but found another home. #EPIX

Now Monique may have burned a few bridges and not played the game but the same can’t be said for Wanda. She’s been doing stand-up, writing and acting in a gang of TV shows and movies for decades. And they offered her, what, less than $250,000? I seriously don’t fuck with math so I will be safe and say it was a lot less than what Amy eventually got paid and a whole lot less than Dave and Chris (who Wanda used to write for, btw).
No matter what you think Mo’Nique is “worth”, if she hadn’t spoken up we might not be having this conversation right now. We’d still be talking about Mark and Michelle when Mo’Nique and Amy or Wanda and Dave are just as interesting and fruitful conversations to be having.
There’s never going to be easy math with which to calculate worth but I do think Wanda has earned at least several million dollars for her harrowing portrayal of Biggie Shorty in 2001’s Pootie Tang. Mo’Nique may have won an Oscar for Precious but Wanda deserves to EGOT based solely on her line reading of “I’m a lady you greasy ass bastard!”.
