People Want To Know: Is Oprah2020 Happening Or Not?
I think we can safely blame Trump for this whole Oprah2020 business. If we weren’t so starved for rational, impassioned and coherent rhetoric, we might have been able to simply appreciate Oprah Winfrey’s very good Cecil B. DeMille acceptance speech for what it was. Instead, people got so caught up with the idea of Oprah>Trump that they lost their damn minds.
Oprah herself has stated that seeing Donald Trump win literally made her go “Oh! Oh!” and think maybe one day she too could piss all over the Lincoln bedroom. So the idea has been out there since way before this week. But now speculation of Oprah2020 has reached a fever pitch and everybody’s screaming will she, won’t she. And nobody can seem to come to a consensus. But CNN says yes, she might actually do this to us. They say that “two of her close friends” say she is “actively thinking” about it.
Some of Winfrey’s confidants have been privately urging her to run, the sources said. One of the sources said these conversations date back several months. The person emphasized that Winfrey has not made up her mind about running.
Oprah’s BFF Gayle King (sorry Reese, she’s just not that in to you) appeared on CBS This Morning and said little to clear things up. Amid a cloud of capital “O” obfuscation, Gayle said Oprah was “intrigued” by the idea.
If Gayle clumsily trying to walk back Stedman Graham’s seemingly clear statement of “she would absolutely do it” is any indication of what an Oprah administration would look like, we’re in deep, deep doo doo.
Meanwhile, over at NBC they’ve got sources who are saying Oprah’s definitely not gonna do it.
NEW: A source close to @Oprah tells @tvkatesnow as of today, she has no intention of running for President in 2020:
“It’s not happening. She has no intention of running,” the source said.
Source says that’s from Oprah herself.— Peter Alexander (@PeterAlexander) January 8, 2018
I guess she’s not running unless she is. All I can say is that I don’t see it for Oprah. When has she taken a hard-line on any major political issue? Other than beating the Time’s Up drum, she’s been quite apolitical (and one could argue that wanting gender equality is not really a political position but a moral one). I was looking for her voice last November when that thing that had happened had happened, but she didn’t have shit to say. But hey, what do I know? I won’t curse us all by saying things couldn’t get worse!
