I’m sure I’m not the only one whose jaw is getting strained from cringing when Kate Winslet talks about Woody Allen. At this point, I’d be ok if every question about Woody Allen was replaced by a question about the wood door from Titanic. But instead we’ve got more of Kate on Woody.
Kate’s latest bout of Woody ass-kissery happened during Variety’s Actors on Actors series between Kate and Gary Oldman. Gary says many actors “want the call” from Woody Allen asking them to be in his next film. Kate says she got the call in June of 2016 from her agent informing her that Woody Allen wanted her for the lead role in Wonder Wheel. But she was a little nervous of working with Woody because she had heard rumors about him. Oh really? Like the sort of unsettling, awful things his daughter Dylan Farrow was been talking about for years? No, Kate is well aware of those rumors – she just doesn’t really care. Kate is talking about Woody’s reputation as a director.
“And then of course I thought to myself, ‘Okay, Woody Allen is known for being quite eccentric, and quite potentially demanding, and also doesn’t like rehearsing with actors.’ So I realized I had all of these things I had heard about Woody Allen as a director and a writer, none of which I knew were true, false, upside down, black, white, pink, grey, no idea.”
And so Kate signed on, and a script was sent over for her to read. And then reality sunk in for Kate and she had a very strong urge to turn it down….. because she had made summer plans with her family.
“I really can’t do that. I just can’t do that. It wasn’t going to work, we had all these plans….and my husband said, ‘What’s it like?’, and I said ‘It’s such a shame, it’s just such a shame. It’s completely brilliant, but I can’t do it. I’m not going to do it.’ And then my daughter overhears this conversation and she goes, ‘Mom, get over yourself. Of course you’re going to bloody do it.'”
Basically, Kate came close to turning it down solely because she wanted to hang out with her kids all summer. But they urged her to do it, because IT’S WOODY ALLEN. Sadly, it doesn’t appear to have paid off for her; Wonder Wheel got zero Golden Globe nominations this morning. What a shame. I was so looking forward to watching the camera pan out to Susan Sarandon rolling her eyes in the audience as Kate gushes over Woody’s brilliance in her acceptance speech.
