The “Girls” Writer Accused Of Rape Was Lying About Getting Shaken Down For Money By His Accuser

If you need to know how Lena Dunham is feeling today, my guess is about a shade or two more “oh fuck” than the face she’s making in that picture. It’s exhausting trying to disassociate yourself from a former colleague/current alleged rapist when they keep making the news.

Last month, actress Aurora Perrineau filed a police report with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department accusing former Girls writer Murray Miller of raping her when she was 17. She reportedly passed a lie-detector test. Murray denied everything. After Aurora’s rape story was reported, Lena Dunham threw her whole “believe all women” mantra out the window and jumped to Murray’s defense. Both Lena and her Girls co-showrunner Jenni Konner released statements implying Aurora was lying. Lena later backtracked with an apology and an excuse about defending the type of people who fill her “world with love.” According to Variety, Murray might have also been filling Lena’s world with bullshit. When Aurora’s story broke, Murray’s lawyers released a statement accusing her of attempting to scam him for a “substantial” amount of hush money before she went to the police. Lawyers for Murray have since backtracked on that.

They apologized, saying that Aurora never tried to shake down Murray for a “substantial” amount of hush money, as they had previously stated. Murray’s legal team blames that bit of  incorrect information on a “good-faith misunderstanding.

Lena hasn’t said anything yet regarding this latest development. But one person coming to her defense for defending Murray is Girls executive producer Judd Apatow. The Hollywood Reporter says that Judd would like you to know that Lena is sorry for talking without thinking first:

“We’re all kind of trying to figure out how to navigate this best. It affects all of our lives and touches all of our lives in all different ways. She apologized for speaking too quickly, but I think many of us are in that situation. And I think overall she is one of the great people in our business fighting for very important causes. And I appreciate that.”

Judd isn’t wrong. Lots of people are guilty of saying stuff before they can fully think about it. But Lena Dunham has become known for saying dumb shit without thinking first. If Lena Dunham starts thinking about the consequences of her words before she says them, is she even technically Lena Dunham anymore? I might have just stumped both Plato and Confucius with that one.
