Thankfully There Was Miss Diana Ross
Last night’s American Music Awards were a mixed bag of awards show spectacle that ranged from awkward messiness (see: everyone’s faces while Christina tried) and bold showmanship (see: the dong-shaped catwalk). But the queen of the evening was the legendary Miss Diana Ross, who was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award. And of course she went above and beyond for the occasion.
I don’t know if Diana Ross told her stylist to make her look like the art world arch nemesis of Delia Deetz from Beetlejuice. But I do know there is a chance her look didn’t cost very much. Diana Ross shops at Marshalls, which means she loves a good deal. We shouldn’t be surprised if Diana was able to throw everything together for under $100 after a quick visit to HomeGoods. A thrifty diva like Diana could easily take a black satin duvet cover and fabric ripped from a leftover Halloween table runner and turn it into red carpet gold.
Diana Ross later slipped into something a bit more comfortable, aka 40 lbs. of purple and pink tulle, and closed the AMA’s with a lifetime achievement-worthy performance.

Diana opened with “I’m Coming Out“, followed by “Take Me Higher“, then “Ease On Down The Road” from The Wiz, “Best Years of My Life“, and ended with “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough.” Diana was uncharacteristically upstaged when she brought her grandbabies on stage with her at the end of her performance. Some didn’t even have to do anything to yank the spotlight away. Like Ashlee Simpson and Evan Ross’ 2-year-old daughter Jagger, who just stood picking at her nose while looking for the closest exit, like “Eh, call me if she does Wheels On The Bus.”
And when Diana Ross was finally given her AMA trophy, she celebrated by holding her most treasured possession in the air: her fanny pack! Maybe if there’s enough room on her precious treasures shelf, Diana will save a little room beside her fanny pack for her Lifetime Achievement Award.

Here’s more of Diana looking amazing, as well as Diana’s family, including last night’s AMA host, living ball of concentrated sunshine Tracee Ellis Ross.
