Don’t let that stunning cityscape behind Sinead O’Connor fool you. She’s not sitting on a private boat somewhere in the Hudson River, marveling at the sunset. She’s in a motel room in New Jersey, and she’s really sad right now. And no, she’s not sad because she’s stuck in New Jersey (although that’s definitely part of it).
Last Thursday, Sinead posted a video to Facebook with an update on her life, and things aren’t good. A little over a year ago, a missing persons alert went out for Sinead in Chicago, where she was living at the time, after she went for a bike ride and didn’t come back. A month after that, Sinead was being tracked down by Chicago police after her family in Ireland reported that she was threatening to jump off a bridge. According to her latest video, she’s currently living in “the arse end of New Jersey” – aka a Travelodge in Hackensack. Congratulations, Chris Christie – you weren’t the butt of a New Jersey joke.
Sinead has battled mental health issues for a long time, and she’s currently deep in the middle of it. She cusses out her family in Ireland for not wanting to help her and not understanding what she’s dealing with, and claims the only person who has been kind to her is her doctor. She also claims her doctor is the reason she’s still around (although she does say she’s not going to die). Sinead also keeps stating that she’s “one of millions” of people living with mental illness.
Many of Sinead’s fans have commented on her video, with some even going so far as to invite Sinead to their homes. I don’t know if Sinead’s family is going to watch that video and do anything, because from all accounts, their relationship with Sinead is a mess. Thank goodness Sinead at least has a doctor looking out for her. And I hope the cloud eventually breaks for Sinead, because I would absolutely love it if she started recording travelogue videos of Hackensack. I’m sure I’m not the only one who wants to hear more about Sinead’s colorful description of the arse end of New Jersey.
UPDATE: Someone posted an update on Sinead’s behalf last night letting everyone know she’s safe, she’s not suicidal, and she’s being taken care of.
