Scarlett & Black!
You know a musical duo is made up of high-potent, industrial-strength glamour when they look like the runners-up of a Nelson and a Marie from Roxette look-alike contest. 911 got a call from me yesterday to report Google Images for criminal blasphemy after I Googled “pics of Scarlett and Black” and got a lot of pictures of Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow. How offensive! Pictures of Twink Fabio and New Wave Susan Powder should’ve been the only pictures that came up after I Googled “pics of Scarlett and Black.”
Before “Scarlet and Black” was a British drama from the 90s, it was a British music duo from the 80s. Scarlett & Black was made up of Robin Hild and Sue West, and their first single, You Don’t Know, was a semi-hit in 1986. Wikipedia says that You Don’t Know reached #20 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the US, and that helped their first album to become a tiny hit. They put out more singles, but in 1989, they broke up. They may or may not have broken up after having a nasty fight over who got to use the last bit of L.A. Looks mousse in their dressing room.
The video for You Don’t Know is like a Salon Selectives commercial sent from the heavens, but this copy from YouTube is so damn blurry and dizzy-inducing that you better swallow a Dramamine before pressing play. It’s like being drunk while on a speeding carousel full of gorgeous people:
I couldn’t find much about what Sue West is up to nowadays, but Robin Hild is still performing and making music, and he’s still causing the air to jizz by whipping his spectacular mane of blonde hair in it. So at least something good is happening in this world.
