James Cromwell Was Sentenced To A Week In Jail

James Cromwell isn’t just an Oscar-nominated actor who’s been in every movie and television show ever. The 77-year-old is also an environmental activist who will sit up in his Barcalounger, right in front of your proposed natural gas power plant, until you decide not to build it. Or until he gets arrested and fined, which he did in Wawayanda, NY in December of 2015. Speaking of that fine, James is refusing to pay it. So a Wawayanda judge has sentenced him to a week in jail, according to the Times Herald-Record. At least he’s getting sent up for a noble reason, as opposed to stranding shallow people on beaches with no wi-fi and soggy sandwiches.

James is part of the self-styled “Wawayanda Six,” a group of activists who staged a sit-in at the site of the Competitive Power Ventures’ natural gas-fired power plant on Dec. 18, 2015. They were all pinched for violation of obstruction of traffic. Their case went to trial back in April, with their lawyer arguing that they were in the right, because the power plant’s emissions would “pose an imminent threat to the local environment and would accelerate climate change.” The judge (obviously a coal-powered Trumpian) didn’t agree, found them all guilty, and ordered them to each pay a $375 fine. Hell no, we won’t go, said James. His lawyer informed Judge MeltingGlacier that James and two of his co-defendants wouldn’t be swiping their debit cards through the courthouse’s magnetic strip card reader anytime soon. The judge called them into court on Thursday and asked each of them if they were going to pay up.

He called each defendant up individually.

“Are you refusing to pay the fine?” McElduff asked Cromwell.

“I am,” Cromwell said.

Judges don’t like when you refuse to pay, so he sentenced him to a week in jail. James doesn’t have to report to his cell just yet because his lawyer is appealing. POWER TO THE PEOPLE! Which is something he actually said! That’s so #OccupyGlamour!

Cromwell said he hopes people realize the injustice of the jail sentence and hoped it would mobilize more people to join their pickets in front of the power plant. The plant is under construction and scheduled to go online in February 2018.

“If we don’t stay together, nothing will change. Power to the people.”

Unfortunately, that plant will probably be built and hasten our environmental collapse. But he tried, which counts for something. He shouldn’t have to spend any time in jail for that. What he SHOULD have to spend time in jail for is his sadistic secret Nazi insane asylum doctor in American Horror Story referring to a woman’s beautiful downstairs mystery as a “mossy bank.” THAT equals jail time.
