43-Year-Old Jamie Denbo Was Told She Was Too Old To Play The Wife Of A 57-Year-Old

Just in case you needed yet another reminder that Hollywood is still a major bummer for some women past the age of fuckable, here you go. Jamie Denbo, aka Ginsberg on Orange Is the New Black and one-half of the very funny Ronna & Beverly, explained on Twitter last week that she was informed that, at 43, she’s too old to play the wife of a 57-year-old man. Only in Hollywood is a 14-year age gap considered too narrow.

The character she was auditioning for was the first wife of said 57-year-old, and their characters had an 18-year-old daughter. That means Jamie’s character would have had her daughter at 25, which seems like a normal age to me. But whoever Jamie was auditioning for was not interested in casting someone who didn’t appear to have gotten knocked up by a teacher on prom night.

Jamie’s hashtag about FXs Feud is probably a reference to Feud’s underlying theme of Hollywood sexism and aging. Or maybe that’s a hint she was auditioning for the upcoming season of Feud based on Prince Charles and Diana. The clues kind of fit. Prince Philip was 60 when Charles and Diana got married, so that covers the old dude. The 18-year-old daughter could be an elderly Corgi. I could totally see a Hollywood casting director look at Jamie and say: “I’m really sorry but 43 might be pushing it. The Queen is old, but we don’t want her reading too old, you know? Do you want to read for The Queen’s mom instead?

But who was that actor and why did they need such a young actress for them? A quick internet search showed me that the following actors are around 57: Sean Penn, Colin Firth, David Duchovny, Brad Garrett. How much younger than 43 were they thinking? Mid-30s? Late 20s? Hopefully not that young. I mean, if I wanted to see someone as old as Colin Firth pretend to be with someone young enough to be his daughter, I’d just rent Magic in the Moonlight.
