Sony Might Drop Dr. Luke

Sony claimed last year that they couldn’t #FreeKesha, but it looks like they very much want to be free of Dr. Luke. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the fake doctor at the heart of Kesha’s years-long contract battle is getting pushed out by Sony.

Sources say that Sony and Dr. Luke are currently negotiating a split. One source denies that Dr. Luke is getting dropped, but it looks like that source isn’t right. Court papers show that Dr. Luke is no longer the CEO of Kemosabe Records, the record label he formed with Sony in 2011. Neither Sony nor Dr. Luke have said anything about this, but THR points out that a profile of Dr. Luke has been scrubbed from Sony’s website.

A source tells Page Six that Dr. Luke’s five-year contract with Sony expired at the end of March. The source adds that Sony still plans on working with him.

Even though it seems like this news should be making Kesha cackle with glee into a pile of glitter, it might not be. The Hollywood Reporter says that Dr. Luke leaving Sony could be bad news for Kesha’s case against him. Kesha has cited in her own court papers that Dr. Luke’s deal with Sony was about to come to an end, which means she would lose Sony as a middle-man between herself and Dr. Luke. This might also provide more evidence for Dr. Luke’s defamation suit against Kesha. Dr. Luke has claimed that Kesha’s sexual assault accusations have caused irreparable damage to his career. Dr. Luke could argue that he was let go from Sony because they didn’t want to be associated with him anymore.

Dr. Luke has produced and co-written a ton of hit songs for people like Kelly Clarkson, Avril Lavigne, Katy Perry, and Pitbull. Most recently he worked with JLo. So I have a feeling that even without an office at Sony, he’ll probably still get work. He’s still going to need an office though. Might I suggest a dilapidated store front between a nail salon and an abandoned pet store in a strip mall? It would totally go with his whole shady-doctor-you-should-think-twice-about-going-to vibe.
