After Everyone In The World Turned The Job Down, Kevin Spacey Has Been Chosen As This Year’s Tonys Host
Kevin Spacey’s name trended on Twitter today and some thought that he either checked out of the glass closet or checked into the afterworld. It’s neither. The Tony people announced today that on June 11th, Kevin Spacey will take the stage at Radio City Music Hall to host what’s arguably the Gay Super Bowl. I say arguably, because I’m not sure if that title belongs to the Oscars, the RuPaul’s Drag Race season finale or whenever Showgirls comes on premium cable. It’s the latter for me, obviously.
Nearly everyone and everyone’s theater queen nephew was reportedly offered the Tonys hosting gig and had to turn it down. The New York Post reported that last year’s host James Corden didn’t want to do it again. Tina Fey, Neil Patrick Harris, Lin-Manuel Miranda and Hugh Jackman were reportedly asked and had to turn it down because of scheduling conflicts. But Kevin Spacey is now here to save the day. Kevin will glue on his fanciest wig and sing and dance as this year’s Tonys host. I am all for this if Kevin and his manager/awards show date Evan from Evan and Jaron get together on the Tonys stage to yodel out a medley of songs from this season’s musicals.
Kevin gave this statement after the announcement was made:
“I was their second choice for Usual Suspects, fourth choice for American Beauty and 15th choice to host this year’s Tony Awards. I think my career is definitely going in the right direction. Maybe I can get shortlisted to host the Oscars if everyone else turns it down.”
The Tony nominations will be announced on May 2.
Kevin Spacey has been on Broadway a few times and in 1991, he won the Best Featured Actor In A Play Tony for Lost In Yonkers.
And for everyone who’s been waiting for Kevin to come out out, wait no more. Because announcing that you’re hosting the Tonys is pretty much a coming out announcement.
