Payless’ Dyeable Satin Shoes!

Note: That picture above is not a picture of the Payless dyeable heel from the 80s and 90s that I remember, but it’ll have to do. It’s actually a picture of a Lela Rose dyeable heel that Payless sold in 2010.

Those of us who remember trying to decide between the knock-off Reeboks and the knock-off L.A. Gears while shopping for back-to-school shoes at Payless in the olden days probably squirted out a bittersweet tear after hearing that they’ve filed for bankruptcy and are closing nearly ten percent of their stores. My 8-year-old self (who spent a good chunk of time searching a Payless for the other half of the perfect sneaker I found by itself in a box on the shelf) is laughing and saying, “Haha, that’s what you get, Payless!” But the grown me is screaming, “Not Payless!

Payless isn’t shutting down completely. They’re just trying to payless bills. CNBC says that Payless filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection and will close 400 out of 4,400 stores. They may close more stores as they try to pull themselves further away from the debt that’s pulling them down. They’re also going to focus on their website since nobody shops at stores anymore. CNBC has more info and details if you need that. Financial shit is really confusing to me unless it’s scream-explained by Suze Orman through my TV.

My first thought after hearing about Payless filing for Chapter 11 was: What will happen to their glorious dyed shoes?! But it looks like Payless stopped doing that a few years ago. Back in the 1980s and 1990s, nearly every chick I knew got white satin Payless heels custom dyed to perfectly match her prom or bridesmaid dress. I don’t know if these are Payless heels, but I remember them looking pretty much like this after Payless’ color dying magicians worked their magic!

Pulling custom dyed shoes from their stores is probably what made Payless’ money situation head for the gutter. Sure, other places offer up custom dyed shoes today, but nobody did it like Payless. I’m sure many a chick misses the feeling of pulling her heels off after a night of sweating on the dance floor only to find that the dye came off of her shoes and her feet now match the color of her dress. You knew your ass had a good time when the dye came off of your custom dyed Payless pumps.
