Brie Larson won a lot of Best Actress awards last year for Room, so this year she got the job of presenting Best Actor at a few award shows. Casey Affleck won many Best Actor awards this year. Brie had to say Casey’s name twice and when she did, she did it with the least amount of enthusiasm as possible. I’ve seen STD results delivered with more oomph. Brie’s excitement level was set to “I’d Rather Be At The DMV On A Monday Morning” when she handed Casey the Golden Globe, and she didn’t clap when he won the Oscar. Brie meant to do all that.
Casey Affleck was sued for sexual harassment by two women and he ended up settling with them in 2010, which is why he says he can’t get into details about it. Brie played a victim of sexual abuse in Room, and at the 2016 Oscars, she hugged every sexual abuse survivor who was a part of Lady Gaga’s performance.
At last night’s L.A. premiere of Kong: Skull Island, Vanity Fair asked Brie about not putting her hands together for Casey’s win at the Oscars. Brie didn’t dribble out some PR bullshit answer, and instead kept it real and simple:
“I think that whatever it was that I did onstage kind of spoke for itself. I’ve said all that I need to say about that topic.”
The thing is, though, Brie did hug Casey Affleck on the Oscars stage. So I’m guessing she hugged him for one of two reasons: 1. To get close enough to his ear to whisper, “I fucking hate you.” Or 2. To put a “Kick Me” sign on his back. And if only Brie knew that the night was going to end on one giant fuck-up. She could’ve gotten the party started early by accidentally saying, “And the Oscar goes to…. Casey Assfuck!”
