Brown and cream Telex headphones from the 1980s!

When I had my physical last year, the nurse told me that in the parking lot were two nice men in Hazmat suits who were going to escort me to a funny-looking tent and spray me down with something that smelled like a mixture of ammonia and RID. What? Don’t they do that at your physical? But before they did that, I had a hearing test and it was very different than the hearing tests of the olden times. The headphones looked like they were made this century, they weren’t covered with a layer of crud and the nurse put disposable covers on them. I also pressed a button instead of raising my hand every time I heard one of those beeps. But it did make me miss the raggedy brown and cream headphones from the 80s…

My school had two or three of these Telex headphones and they were used on hundreds of children during hearing test times. You’d put them on your head and raise your hand every time you heard a beep. I don’t ever remember an adult putting disposable, germ-blocking ear cozies on them. They were so tired, worn out and over it that they looked like they’ve been working as second counselor to the president for the past few weeks.

I don’t know if my school ever changed out those dirty brown and cream Telex headphones, but I’d like to think that they’re still powering through and giving kids all kinds of weird ear diseases. I mean, I’ve been listening to a song by douche duo The Chainsmokers a lot recently. It’s obvious that I caught some ear disease from those headphones decades ago and that disease is the reason why I like that Chainsmokers song. That’s totally it.
