Beyonce, seen above eyeing the next mark she’s going to steal from, is being sued by the sister of late bounce artist and YouTuber Messy Mya (government name: Anthony Barré) for using unauthorized pieces of his videos in her song Formation. If the other Mya is wondering why her Instagram page is getting bombed with bee emojis, she now knows why. The Beyhive just got the wrong Mya, that’s all.
Messy Mya, who I first learned about from the highly-missed blog Crunk + Disorderly, was murdered in November 2010. Before his death, he posted a video where he did what he always did: talk to and about people in his neighborhood in New Orleans. Starting at the 0:40 mark below, Messy Mya lets out an “oooh, yes, I like that.”
In another one of his videos, Messy Mya spits out the lines, “What happened at the New Wil’ins,” and, “Bitch I’m back, by popular demand.”
At the beginning of Formation, you can hear Messy Mya’s lines. And the “oooh, yes, I like that” part from his other video can be heard at the 1:00 mark:
The New Orleans Advocate says that Angel Barre, Messy Mya’s sister and the sole heir of his estate, tried to get in touch with Beyonce’s people to talk about the unauthorized samples. But the response Angel got was the same response Michelle Williams gets after asking if she can guest on one of Beyonce’s new songs. She got silence. So on Monday, Angel filed a lawsuit against Beyonce and Sony. The lawsuit states that Beyonce didn’t ask for permission and didn’t give Messy Mya credit. It also says that Beyonce used the sample during live performances of Formation. The lawsuit adds that Messy Mya worked alone!
Her lawsuit alleges that leaving Beyoncé’s use of her brother’s work unchallenged would create the impression that Messy Mya’s estate consented to “defendants’ use of his voice, which has impaired Mr. Barre’s reputation and credibility as an independent artist who worked alone and did not endorse popular singers.”
Angel is asking for $20 million in damages, plus she wants royalties and wants her brother to get credit on the song.
Many thought that Beyonce was paying tribute to a jewel of New Orleans, but if that lawsuit is telling the truth, then she was really grave robbing! Beyonce was digging up a grave in the middle of the night as Solange stood watch. Beyonce is getting bold with her (alleged) acts of thievery. If this is true, then Beyonce will probably make it go away by farting out a diamond and handing it to Angel. But honestly, the only way that she can right this ILLEGAL wrong is by truly paying tribute to Messy Mya. And yes that means naming one of her twins Messy and the other one Mya. If she did that, I’d be extremely jealous of the one that got the name Messy.
