Ryan Gosling Thanked Eva Mendes And Dedicated His Golden Globe Award To Her Brother

While Ryan Reynolds was being consoled by Andrew Garfield (“I know I know, you would have won if musicals and comedies had separate categories“), Ryan Gosling thanked the Hollywood Foreign Press Association for giving him his first Golden Globe award. Ryan took home Best Actor in a Musical/Comedy last night for La La Land, and he filled his acceptance speech with nice things about his “ladyEva Mendes.

Ryan didn’t bring Eva Mendes with him to the Golden Globes last night, and I’m sure that caused his fangirls to get excited at the prospect of a maybe-single Ryan. But that dream was shattered hard after he took the stage and accepted his award.

Ryan started with a joke about being confused for Ryan Reynolds, something Blake Lively will no doubt get high off of for several months. (“Can you believe Ryan Gosling gets confused for mah husband? Goodness me!“). After he thanked everyone associated with La La Land, he said he wanted to thank “one person properly“, which was “his lady.” Ryan never thanked Eva by name and says he was able to make La La Land while his “lady” took care of their daughter Esmeralda and was pregnant with their second, Amada. Then Ryan turned into the dream boyfriend character the internet made up years ago by dedicating his award to Eva’s brother Juan Carlos Mendes, who died of throat cancer in April.

Normally I don’t like things that make me feel emotional while I’m trying to get drunk, but I really liked that Ryan made his GG speech about his family. Ryan won for Best Acting in a Comedy or Musical, and I was dreading that he might pull a theater kid move and accept his award by singing his thank-yous. I’ve already heard the opening of City of Stars about 1200 times already, so I appreciate what you did Ryan.
