Dame Maggie Smith Jokes That She’s Coming To Collect Her Emmy From The Lost And Found
If you watched the Emmys, then you know that Jimmy Kimmel made a big joke about how Dame Maggie Smith is too good to come to the Emmys. Jimmy joked that this year they were enforcing the “Maggie Smith Rule“, which states that if you’re not present to collect your award, it automatically goes to the next person on the nominee list. Maggie Smith has been nominated for nine Emmy awards, all Outstanding Actress and Outstanding Supporting Actress, and hasn’t shown up once. Minnie Driver and Michael Weatherly presented the Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series Emmy on Sunday, and when Maggie won, Jimmy stepped in, grabbed the award and said that her award will be waiting for her in the lost and found.
I assumed that when Dame Maggie’s assistant informed her of what had happened, she wrinkled up her face and sneered “Good heavens, how frightful! As if I would ever pick from the lost property bin like some sort of Dickensian street urchin.” But no, Dame Maggie has a good sense of humor and she kept the joke going. Yesterday, Masterpiece PBS tweeted a statement from Maggie about her award.

“I was very astonished and pleased to win the award. I feel the Emmys have been overly generous to me. If Mr. Kimmel could please direct me to the lost and found office I will try and be on the next flight. Love, Old Maggie.”
Maggie Smith has a very busy schedule of drinking tea while raising her posh eyebrow in disgust at things, so the Emmy employee who runs that lost and found probably shouldn’t hold their breath waiting for her to collect her trophy. Maybe it’s because I just put some fresh batteries in my shade detector, but I think I’m picking up some shade in that “overly generous to me” part of her statement. It’s like “You’ve been too generous. Stop being so generous. No really, stop giving me your trash awards, I clearly don’t want them.”
