It Sounds Like Tig Notaro Definitely Isn’t Friends With Amy Schumer Anymore

It sometimes seems like all comedians are friends and get along with each other, because how can you hate on someone when you’re cracking jokes all the time, but no. Apparently sometimes they slap at each other and call each other’s alleged fake-friend ways out. Just like regular people! One such case of friends turned not friends is Amy Schumer and Tig Notaro, and the person doing the slapping is Tig.

Tig Notaro got into her relationship with Amy Schumer during a recent interview with The Guardian, and in case you couldn’t already have guessed, it got really awkward. Tig was asked about some comments Amy made about Tig to Vanity Fair back in 2012. Amy was quoted as saying this about her “close friend” Tig:

“Looking masculine and being gay, the challenges of the road are 20 times harder for Tig than other female comedians. People fear what they don’t understand.

Well, some shit must have really gone down in four years. Because if what Tig said next is any indication, they’re definitely neither “close” nor “friends” anymore.

When asked if it was still true that it was 20 times harder for Tig than other female comedians, Tig responded with this:

Anger sparks in Notaro’s normally calm eyes. “I don’t know what she was talking about. It sounds like offensive nonsense to me. I find that so offensive and weird,” she says, looking down, trying to control her very audible irritation. “If you knew me well, you would never say that.”

Those words made The Guardian go “Huh?“, and remind Tig of Amy’s past comments about taking care of her “great friend Tig.” Tig fought a hard battle with breast cancer in 2012, which she used as material for a stand-up special and Amy worked into a sketch for Inside Amy Schumer. Tig is side-eyeing all of that now.

“Ummm…” Notaro says, looking away. Did you just work with her? The atmosphere, previously relaxed, has palpably prickled. “I’ve worked with her. I worked with her for the first season [of Inside Amy Schumer]. Let’s leave it there,” Notaro says, closing down the subject.

Not too long after, Tig took a swipe at some “inauthentic” comedians who she claims tried to take care of her during her breast cancer struggle “just to look good.” However, Tig kept it vague and didn’t name-names. Hmmm, whoever could she be talking about? I wonder if one of the names rhymes with Shamey Rumor?

Here’s the sketch that feels really awkward to watch now.

It’s especially awkward because it sounds like Tig did most of her dragging with her eyes. Everything was like “Tig looks away” and “A spark of pissed-off anger flickers in Tig’s eye.” Not to mention that “Ummmmm.” You know someone is truly not having it when they pair an “Um” with no eye contact.
