Pia Zadora, the forever pride of the Golden Globes!
Pia Zadora was HSOTD almost 11 years ago and she was HSOTD for being Pia Zadora. But today I’m honoring her for being the most deserving Golden Globes winner in Golden Globes history! By now, everybody pretty much knows the story of how Pia Zadora ROCKED the Golden Globes in 1982 when she won “Best New Star of the Year” for displaying her flawless acting skills in the underrated masterpiece Butterfly. That performance made Pia a multiple-award winning actress, because it didn’t only win her the Golden Globe, it also won her a Razzie, thankyouverymuch.
In case your school system did you wrong by not teaching you this important American event in history class, the story goes that Pia Zadora’s Israeli billionaire businessman husband at the time, Meshulam Riklis, transformed her from a touring chorus girl into a second-rate Las Vegas headliner (that’s from Wikipedia’s lips). Sugar Papi Riklis later became the sole investor of the father-daughter-fucking movie Butterfly and he made Pia the star of it. It also starred Ed McMahon, Orson Welles and Stacy Keach. Before Butterfly even came out (and flopped hard), Pia won the “Best New Star of the Year” Golden Globe for it and so of course, many jealous bitches accused her billionaire husband of buying it for her. Sugar Papi Riklis flew several voters to Las Vegas to screen the movie and he also screened it at his mansion in Beverly Hills.
Pia won over Kathleen Turner, Rachel Ward and Elizabeth McGovern. Outrage ensued and people said that the gold digger gold dug her way to a Golden Globe. The category of “Best New Star of the Year” was done away with two years later. Yes, Pia obviously had something to do with the Golden Globes getting rid of that category. But they didn’t get rid of it because her husband bought her the award. They got rid of it because they realized that no young artiste could ever top this multi-layered acting triumph!
The Hollywood Reporter did a piece about Pia’s GG win last year and she still thinks that she won because of her talent and not because of her then husband’s money and influence:
Zadora also claims she won fair and square. “There was just an energy in the room — they liked me! These little Italian guys, they grabbed me [at The Beverly Hilton] and said, ‘We’re so excited, you’re going to win!’ “
Pia Zadora went on to star in other cinematic jewels like The Lonely Lady (aka the garden hose raping movie), Hairspray, Voyage of the Rock Aliens and Troop Beverly Hills. Believe it or not, Pia has never been nominated for an Oscar. I know, why are we not rioting in the streets of Beverly Hills over that? So when I win Powerball on Wednesday (and I will win while getting attacked by a shark and butt fucked with a lightning bolt at the same time), I’m going to use my winnings to buy Pia the belated Oscar she so deserves!
