The legendary Cicely Tyson!

The Tonys happened last night and some of the night belonged to Terrence Mann’s majestic Gandalf mane and the rest of the night belonged to Cicely Tyson. Cicely Tyson did everything perfect. That wig looks like it was laid on her head by the hands of several Gods and that dress looks like the aftermath of a fight between an army of 80s satin prom dresses and an army of satin princess bedspreads. Glamour IS looking like a satin ruffle serpent is swallowing you whole. All the ruffles were on Cicely Tyson last night. But the best thing that came out of Cicely Tyson last night was her speech.

Cicely won Best Leading Actress in a Play for her performance in The Trip to Bountiful and her acceptance speech was subtle drama from beginning to end. The words slowly dripped out of Cicely’s mouth like molasses. She gave us dramatic pauses and pure poetry.

“‘Please wrap it up’ it says. Well, that’s exactly what you did with me. You wrapped me up in your arms after 30 years and now I can go home with a Tony!”

Did Maya Angelou write her speech?

The producers of the Tonys announced that next week they’re going to hold another Tony Awards where they’ll honor Cicely Tyson for Best Costume in a Speech, Best Wig-Wearing in a Speech, Best Direction of a Speech, Best Production of a Speech, Best Writing of a Speech and Best Performance of a Speech. That was the best everything.

Here’s Cicely posing with fellow Tony winners Billy Porter (for Best Leading Actor in a Musical for Kinky Boots) and Patina Miller (for Best Leading Actress in a Musical for Pippin).
