I'm very late to the party but in NY the homeless get roughly 500 a month for food, I lived across a homeless shelter and most in that specific location were healthy young guys, one even worked in our building. They had people bring them meals plus churches had meals etc... I learned a lot and I learned that food is not lacking, shelters are not lacking etc... Iearned not to give them a penny but I have my reasons for that. I also strongly believe that we should provide more assistant to people with true mental disabilities. Now I'm cynical after being abused so many times, I'm low income and technically qualify for Assistant but as long as you are working or attending school you don't get help, they want you at home doing nothing.
The people on welfare seem to be drug dealers and scammers, they either are making good money sitting at home selling weed or doing nothing going to sit on a park since they get a free apt and food and utilities , yes I know many many many people that are in welfare since I can only afford crappy apts. and it hurts to go to work 9 to 5 and not being able to afford half the things the welfare people are doing like 3 months in the haptoms, true story, also homeowners!! Living of soup kitchens free food, using free govt cellphone etc.... And someone who tries hard gets nada
I recently applied to low income housing and got approved but I haven't even heard from them, I'm unnenployed but I "make TOO much" when even in a full time job I was considered low income but not low income enough to get any help. So I struggle and paid off all my bills and at times go hungry and cashed my 401k just to be able to get by, but I won't get any help because I'm productive and can't sit at home doing nothing.

I agree with the comments below. I've worked in literally every government handout program at the state, federal, and tribal level and they all function to take tax payer dollars and "invest" them in losing propositions, so to speak. However, after moving to Kalifornia 5 years ago, I realize that this state is clearly the land of opportunity for recipients of government assistance (aka Obama supporters).

I just read the United Socialists of Kalifornia have just decided on a retroactive tax for small businesses that goes back 4 years plus an interest penalty. Now mind you this is a new tax and businesses did not underpay in the past but they get an interest penalty!

Re: Homelessness - I live in DTES Vancouver (my choice for now as an artist with a nice apartment) and working on a photo project about the former Remand Jail being turned into good quality, affordable housing. The research I have recently done has shocked me. The world is awash in homelessness and even developed, high-end countries are witnessing a tidal wave of desperation. I expect that a more universal understanding will get to the heart of the matter and hopefully result in real and usable solutions. Peace.

I guess I'd rather see her getting a little too much money from the Feds, than her kids going hungry.

There is no way to know the exact circumstances of someone becoming homeless. If I can give money or whatever, I do, no questions asked.

I'm appalled that you can make $119K per year after you've deliberately birthed a litter and still get welfare. Yep. Her fertility doctor brought these children into the world with an obviously mentally ill woman. He deserves to have to do daily child care or pay for daily child care for them. He is no different than the other deadbeat dads out there.

I have to agree with Event Horizon. I have quite a few friends who are drug counselors, social workers and psych MDs..I've heard many a heartbreaking story with these people's lives...mental illness is rampant throughout the homeless community and it's not always as black and white as everyone wants to make it seem so they can sleep at night after they've made all of their assumptions.

Also, I maintain the opinion that she WANTS those children taken off her hands, but isn't woman enough to admit she can't handle it, and put them up for adoption. Everything she has done is a passive aggressive way of achieving this.

The downtown area is a really great little shopping district with unique shops...until, some fucker on the street who is perfectly capable (physically, anyway) of working is yelling, "I need money. Need some money.". Fuck you, asshole. I never give a cent to those ones. But when the person is the elderly guy playing a violin and asking for nothing, I give. I thought it might improve, unfortunately, after a business owner was stabbed in broad daylight last year by a psychotic guy who didn't take his meds. I did notice an increased police presence in the downtown for a month or so after, but then nada. Whether it's an attention-seeking octomom type, livin' life hippies, criminals, or the truly needy is where there ain't enough social workers in the USA to really assess every individual case.

Welfare doesn't exist anymore. It was replaced back in the 90s with a system called TANF. TANF recipients are required to maintain a job or be actively looking for a job in order to recieve assistance. Also, you can only recieve TANF every other year for a maxium of 5 years in a lifetime....or something like that, can someone please clarify?

EH - I'm not saying all homeless are homeless by choice. But in the city where I live 90% of them chose to remain homeless because it's easy, they get what they need and they can remain drug addicts because of the free needle exchange. They receive daily meals at the shelter the city just built, they are provided bicycles for transportation. This City & County is ridiculous in regards to GIVING.

What I'm saying is that a very small amount of people (mostly street kids) "choose" to be homeless. What kind of job can you get if you have no legs and severe PTSD? Who's going to hire a herion addict? Who chooses to wait in line 2 hours at a salvation army 3 times a day to get one scoop full of gruel that tastes like burnt styrofoam?

A herion addict isn't going to say, "I don't have access to needles so I guess I'll stop doing drugs", no, they'll use used needles, contract HIV and pass it around without knowing or caring because their minds are messed up from drugs. Someone who's certified mental can't snap out of it because he's no longer recieving free meals and become a functioning member of society.

Theres nothing easy in any way, shape or form about being homeless.....it's the hardest life one can concievable live. I dare you to go camp out in that tent city for a week and see how easy it is....
