Hey y'all:
Just came back from a jazz performance, and ran into two people who played on my (buried in my closet) album - they were happy to see me, etc. No reason they shouldn't be, I guess, but I've been such a musical hermit, its nice to know I am welcome to play with the big boys again.
THANKS EVERYONE for the language learning tips. French is the language I am most eager to learn, although I have friends in Germany ad Italy and NONE in France (that I know of), so I'm going to learn at least enough of each language to be able to get drunk and find my way home again. I was born in France, though, so am trying to learn the language in an attempt to be a ex-pat.
There. I said it. Breakdown has a lot of experience being a Black expat, I know, but he's hot and male, so I assume I won't be playing by his book (I think those songs are too fast for me).
Anyway, to get French citizenship you need to live there for five years, etc.
WR: Spanish is probably the language other than English that I understand the most, because i listen to Afro-Cuban music all the time, and I studied in high school.
And on a sad note - tragic about Mindy McCready. I didn't know of her at all except through Dlisted, but I know she was a musician and had little kids :(

TR, you can do it inexpensively by using online tutorials and reading magazines and websites in the language. I mean, reading MK's writing you already know several (bad) words, right? lol Also, you can try listening to online radio stations and watching tv shows. Hearing how the words are grouped together is very helpful to the learner of a new language. Don't laugh but telenovelas (soaps) are a great way to hear how people speak. And did you know that DVD's have a soundtrack for French and Spanish too? If you've seen the film already, you can try listening in another language and becoming familiar with the words. Lastly, is it an option at all to go somewhere where the language is spoken regularly, even if it's within the States? Hearing it spoken will help you the most. If you still need some grammar basics the local library should have some beginner language books to get started.

Are you by chance trying to learn Spanish? I had a bit in high school and college, but as they say, if you don't use it, you lose it. And believe me, I have lost it. I don't know if it will work, but I am going to look for a couple of used Spanish language text books and try to get a grasp on it again sometime down the road. Then, try to gain further ground by tuning into the Spanish channels on cable. Cheap is good! ;)

It's a good day. I did a good deed for someone, I hooked up someone ready to send her dog to the pound with another person who'd recently lost their longtime puppeh companion. Both dogs are the same breed and the neighbor was ready to accept another pet in her life. Everybody is happy so I'm glad it worked out.

Well damnit. My favorite coffeeshop/bookstore in DC (bambam, if you're in this thread, it's Politics & Prose in Chevy Chase) got rid of their wi-fi. Something I found out after I walked 2.5 miles uphill in the cold to work on a project, because my Internet was out (it's fixed now). grrr.
I was all set to rag on them but apparently they've been getting a lot of complaints about "squatters"--that is, people who buy a $1 cookie and park themselves in the cafe all day, taking up room that other people could be using. I get that, that's annoying and bad for business. Still, it was one of my favorite places to get work done.
ah well, I got lots of exercise if nothing else. My fat ass needs it.

Thanks, Foxxy. We never lost power but we got hammered by the snow. Our plow guy couldn't get out of his own driveway to come do ours at first! Then there was a fuel pump odyssey, some payloader action, and the small issue of a broken lamp post to deal with. Boooooooooooooo!

bambam, leave Alabama Shakes alone. I never heard of them (what? my tv is broken, and I am old). I had on SNL in the background while on line (I was not home). In fact, I had on headphones, with the volume low, listening to songs on youtube. And I looked up and saw this woman rocking her guitar. And she was not some skinny, tarted up, weak-voiced singer, but a someone with pipes who loves singing, can do it, and can play guitar, too. To me they sounded really good. I'd never heard of them, and I don't know if I would have had the same response if I had just heard them on the radio. But I saw them when I saw them, and it was a damn good first impression.

I saw them on SNL too, was underwhelmed by that song Hold On. I thought is was a shame cuz she really killed her part when she sang at the grammys.
But I fell asleep, missed the second song. Then I caught (about 3 or 4am) AS doing a set on Austin City Limits along with Gary Clark Jr. They did that crappy song and a second that didn't move me at all but the third and fourth songs were fantastic.
I hope they get better, they got real potential.

Just catching up on SNL and while it's not exactly my cup of tea, I was blown away by Alabama Shakes. Those guys are tight and I could not take my eyes off the lead singer. She gives it ALL. She doesn't care about makin sexy face and showing off her legs or whatever. I really enjoyed it.
And Christoph Waltz looks too much like JM J Bullock to be sexy to me.
