Sweet Brown Makes Her Local Commercial Debut!
Former HSOTD, internet superstar and bronchitis' #1 hater (but aren't we all?) Sweet Brown has finally made her TV debut in a commercial for a dentist's office that is only airing in Oklahoma. This is just the beginning, soon we'll be seeing Sweet Brown say her catchphrases for commercials for everything from a colonic center ("I got constipation! Ain't nobody got time for that!") to the free clinic ("I said 'Lord Jesus, it's the clap.")
And more importantly, why didn't this commercial play during the Super Bowl?!

ITA ab having to switch back and forth from "business-voice" at work etc. and regular voice when you're in an all-black environment so that Black people think you're Black enough. It's really annoying.
The reason why I brought up "talking white/black" was because you said, "she isn't trying to be white." And that made me think of talking white. I'm glad you feel me on that point tho.

Also interesting is the line that "professional" and "highly educated" Black people sometimes have to walk to be able to roll with the "street lingo" and "street identity" when and where that is needed, and then be able to roll back into "the King's English." it was at first irritating and then amusing to me that, because i can flip back and forth between "street" and "professional" here, i was accused of lying about being a business professional. from an early age Black people with career goals HAVE to learn how to walk both walks and talk both talks. very very few white people have ever walked that line. and most couldn't.

Foxxy, I agree with you on the point that she isn't "confusing" to white audiences. She's in her "place" as she should be and she's not doing any harm. Shucking and jiving like that. Ugh. She's even wearing an Aunt Jemima head scarf for Christ's sake!

partially agree. imo it's not that it reinforces a mass belief that "this is how all Black people are." to me it reinforces biased, pre-conceived mass expectations re: economically and socially disadvantaged people of color. leaving weight and hygiene out of the equation for the purpose of this comment, if Mama June made this commercial, she'd be ripped to shreds here. but, since this level of presentation is all that is expected of "those people like Sweet Brown" this commercial is all good.
Sweet Brown smiles a lot. Folks like to see Black, and economically and disadvantaged people, smile. Makes them seem a lot less threatening. Sweet Brown is not "confusing." she's not doing anything that could be [wrongly] construed as "trying to be white" so she's easily understood and accepted

I know all of you are going to jump down my throat because y'all LOVE this woman but...
Am I the only one that finds this offensive?? It's a typical "mammy" character that a lot of white people just LOVE to laugh at (yes I know black people are laughing too, but they're more laughing WITH her). You're laughing AT her because of her apparent ignorance and lack of manners as well as the typical gold tooth (which signifies lower socio-economic background, low-class, poor etc.) and improper use of English. The only reason why y'all think it's funny is because of those negative racial stereotypes.
Also, I'm not saying there's anything wrong with being that way normally (as I'm sure she is), but for white people to broadcast it and put that image out there, it seems like they're saying: "This is how all black people are in America." And I disagree with lumping everyone of one race together into one mostly negative stereotype, regardless of how funny it is.

From my perspective (I'm Mexican-American), I see a lot of White people harboring White Guilt that renders them unable to laugh at ANYTHING, and they get way more offnded by things than the people who are supposedly being maligned. I say, "relax, White people. Some shit is genuinely funny, and it's OK to laugh". Ms. Brown is adorable and has a fun personality, and I think she enjoys being a comedienne of sorts.

I really love this woman :). I was slightly addicted to that song and every time I watched the video I was stuck looking at her eyes. She has really nice eyes.
