ETA: My mother is a public school teacher, I was a public school teacher, and my dad teaches at a public university. All three of us agree that the public school system is a massive failure churning out people who cannot read, write, or do arithmetic properly. My nephew says that his public school is boring, they try to teach him stuff he already knows, and they give him reams of worksheets that when I look at them, appear to be gobbledygook.

I have a friend with 6 and a 7 year old as well as a 13 year old, and I can't tell you how many times she has showed me the countless "packets" of worksheets, and was like "wtf do I do with this?" I see so many kids these days either illiterate as hell or can't spell for shit. Just go to any of their facebooks or any social media page for proof. Idk where the hell the break down came from, but I have to agree that things are different and have changed and not for the better.

Even back in the 90s in THE SOUTH when I went to school, the educational system, at least to me, seemed a hell of a lot more "educational" and even then, it was a disgrace, but leaps and bounds better, over the things I see and hear about now. My cousin's 9 year old has many issues in many areas of study including reading and cursive writing that when I went to school I remember having gotten passed way earlier than 9. It wasn't an individual case either, it was what they were teaching them on that current level that they should have been taught already. Like someone else said, you guys have my respect and get mad props for even attempting to educate our youth with all the bullshit.

I miss Top Chef! Since I quit cable, and was getting sick of all the Housewives drama, Top Chef was the best program Bravo had to offer IMO.

I also went to culinary school and hoped to see myself on there some day, but I digress. It's one of the better cooking shows.

bored, my dad says his secretaries are former teachers that make about half the salary they did before, but they are happy because they don't get treated like crap by the malcontent kids, the deadbeat parents, and the draconian administrations of public school.

Thank you, Crazyinjapan. His school is Christian but nondenominational. Plus they don't give us grief over his rocker gear. He loves skulls and crossbones, rock/punk music (the ramones).. I don't know where he gets it from, I listen to NPR mostly, I'm a boring dud. Plus they celebrated Halloween with scary costumes, so luckily they're not AKC caliber. Right now they do choir b/c they're so little. Thank you for the tips.

bored, I fled the teaching profession because the conditions were so bad. Just in time, too, because now they're talking about arming teachers and having in-services at the target range. But yeah, poor folks with gadzooks of children... too many to pay attention to, much less fund their raising. Our school fed them free breakfasts and lunches, sent them home with backpacks of food... the heavy irresponsibility sickened me. Plus the parents were harried assholes who couldn't give a shit. I say go to the GD health department people! They give you several options of birth control for free. All these losers are having bunches of kids when there are loving, responsible people who would love to have just one child.

That's a reason a lot of educators give who got out. I mean, if you guys/gals are all saying similar things. Clearly there is an issue in regards to parents not doing their jobs as parents and the educational system/educators taking on roles they shouldn't have too. It's really sad because even though they shouldn't take on full responsibility for teaching a child everything, teachers are VERY important to a child's learning process, and it's really unfortunate to see a lot of DECENT teachers who could really make an impact, flee from it, and go elsewhere because they aren't getting treated properly. Or because they are getting dumped with a bigger responsibility that is beyond what they should deal with.
My mother is friends with a lady, who like you, got out of teaching for the same reasons. She actually works in a grocery store now. And likes it better than her teaching job. She told my mom the money wasn't bad, neither were the benefits, but the stress, headache, and bullshit she had to deal with just was not worth it.

Jessica: definitely private, if you can afford it. Unless it is run by religious nutters, like some of the private schools around here--ACK! My nephew started school, kindergarten and first grade, at Montessori. He's now in public school and his standardized test scores are off the charts. Also, if you can afford music lessons, get them started on that early, too. It helps them with their math skills. Never too early to start bringing up a bright and creative child. Good luck!

A couple of ex teachers here.. Did you all ever teach at private schools? My eldest (5) goes to private; not fancy schmancy mind you, but the reason I have him there if b/c of all the pressure from these standardized tests. My sister is about to move my 3rd grade nephew to private b/c he's about to have a nervous breakdown from the pressure. Which, in your opinion, is better, public or private?

That's the reason I don't think I could ever be a teacher. Too much to deal with from parents who just aren't parents, don't care, and expect the teacher to teach the child all it ever needs to know. I have a few friends that work in education that tell me some horror stories about how parents just don't give a shit. The last place I lived, they constantly had children unattended to. Some as small as toddler age, running around with nothing more than a diaper on with a bottle. No socks, no shoes, and this was in cold weather(when we have it). No parent in sight. I don't even like kids, don't want any, but seeing that shit really bothered me. How someone could have so little regard for their child. And this was a place known for wreckless speed of people driving in and out of the neighborhood. To this day I am shocked that not one of those kids got hit by a car.

I just think we should reward people for family planning, not for irresponsible and uncontrolled breeding. I love children, don't get me wrong. And yes, Foxx, I can understand the personal freedom angle. And Withy, you are right that it would be hard to implement. But if we don't stop paying poor people to have babies, there are going to be more and more people on the dole. It's harsh, but it's true.

At least all these preggy celebs on the D today probably make enough money to raise the children they have.

My horses are good. We are supposed to get cold temps this weekend, aka normal Northern MN weather that we have been lucky to avoid for 2 years, so I have been feeding them extra. Have to fill the water tanks up tomorrow cause it will be no fun when it's below zero.
