Mr. Drummond Has Passed Away
And now Todd Bridges is the last surviving member of the Drummond family. Because TMZ says that Conrad Bain, who played Mr. Drummond for all 8 seasons of Diff'rent Strokes, has floated up to the great, big penthouse in the sky where Dana Plato and Gary Coleman were waiting for him. Conrad's family was with him when he passed away at an independent living facility on Monday night. Conrad was 89 and would've turned 90 on February 4th.
Conrad was born in Canada and acted in some plays at the Stratford Shakespeare Festival before he moved to NYC. Conrad acted in a bunch of productions on Broadway before he sashayed onto our TV screens as Dr. Harmon in Maude and the legendary Mr. Drummond. Conrad's daughter Jennifer said that he was "an amazing father" and "a lot like Mr. Drummond but much more interesting in life."
Conrad is survived by his daughter Jennifer, his two sons and his twin brother Bonar Bain. Um, is it a bad time to say that I really want to know more about this Bonar Bain?
Rest in peace, Mr. Drummond! May heaven be a place where the phrase "Watcha talking about you know the rest..." is illegal.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! I loved him. I wanted him to be my dad. I wanted to be the daughter Kimberly & live in the penthouse.
Bless him. Thanks for the wonderful memories, Mr D.
NOOO GOD TAKE THAT REDHEAD KID INSTEAD.
RIP Mr. Drummond. :(

so sad he outlived two of his way younger co-stars...and would have outlived Todd if he didn't stop the crack...he seemed like a righteous and classy dude.
Three of the people in that picture are now dead. Urgh.
I never watched DS but remember him in Maude. RIP to you, sir.
Rest in peace.

I remember that episode where the boys finally called Mr. Drummond, DAD. It resonated with me because it took awhile for me and my brother to call our step-dad, DAD, instead of his 1st name.

Dixie Carter played his wife near the end of its run .. hey she's dead too. Wonder if that annoying little ginge kid with the bowl cut that played her son is still around...
------------------------------------------------
The kid, Danny Cooksey, is still around. He does cartoon voiceovers now, though as a teen he was in that Nickelodeon show, Salute Your Shorts. Apparently, he's well adjusted, married, has kids, and is pretty successful with his voiceover work.
Somone asked about Adelaide, she's dead; but the other housekeeper Pearl does the voice of Mrs. Puff on Spongebob Squarepants.
@SFRB Thank Fuck! I was about to light candles!! I dont want to miss anyone.
God Keep her as well!
EDIT: that CLIP!! awww My Husband calls me "the Gooch" after arnold's bully because i threatened to bash this ladies windows in if she didnt move her SUV off my landscaping.
@Jewslim - NO! PEARL IS STILL ALIVE and she's the boat instructor (i think?) on spongebob!

NO!!! omg Willis is the only one left. GOD KEEP YOU SIR WILLIS
I never could get into this show, it was covered in far to much cheese for me.
I know Mrs Garrett is still alive as she made the news for calling Joan Collins a bitch, It's Hysterical.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2v61IDv6OA4
But what about the other housekeeper Adelaide?
Texan doc - yeah he played that cheap doctor Arthur Harmon he and Maude would go at it and his lil wifey Vivian would just clutch her pretty pearls all agast haha !!
Sad he was a nice guy was Conrad. So close to turning 90 also. He will be missed.
R. I. P. Mr. Bain.
I got to ask is it just me or is that you feel a part of your childhood is gone when u read this ? Like as if you take the sadness on a personal level cuz u used to see them on tv and they made you laugh. Plus he played a nice guy on tv and he actual was a kind man irl. To me he's like the male version of Betty white was when she was a snarky sue ellen then the lovable rose on gg. Also Betty is going to 91 soon.
O. T. Does anyone else see what the heck they are peddling at American App on the side ads some low cut V Gloria bathing suit with a see thru mesh panel ? Wtf?! How low can they go ?!?

@ Rande and CokeyBloke -- my stepmom was in an awesome assisted living facility in Ohio. if i lived in that area i'd be angling to reserve a space for myself for the future

They still play them but now they cover the Kardashians, Amanda Bynes and as I noticed last night, Holly Madison.
An independent living facility is an old folks' home where the residents have some amount of independence. It's basically an apartment building with its own cafeteria and nurses on duty. They tend to be nicer than nursing homes.

poor dana. her only son also commited suicide.
what? omg that is really sad. I remember when she died her sleazoid boyfriend videotaped her dying and sold it to the highest bidder.
She was a trainwreck but unlike Blohan she had an endearing quality that made you root for her. I'll never forget her appearance high as fuck on Sally Jessy going on about being clean and sober. It was really awkward to watch..

I honestly didn't know the term. And I don't like happy euphemisms. Or the word "facility." :)
I said I'd like to get dragged out but I'd rather die shivering in a freak blizzard or lonely lifeboat.

it doesn't make sense now, seeing as how Lindsay Lohan is still relevant.
=====================================
I think in part the Internet has created an industry of 24/7 celebrity fuck ups that feed it and make it money so there is a certain amount of value to someone like linds. Say what you will but Linds has made a lot of people rich being a fuck up. I think maybe allowing her to stay "relevant" serve others a purpose? Just a thought anyway.

What's an "independent living facility"? A house?
*****************************
Cute. My dad was in one before he died. He had his own apartment, shopped for himself, ect, but the facility had a dining room if he wanted to eat there, activities and a shuttle, etc.
Aww, that's sad. He seemed like a nice guy. From what I saw on THS. He probably saw the shit his poor co-star kids were going through and forbade his kids from being in showbiz.
I'm glad he had a family who cared about him.
I remember Dana Plato had a tragic life. She was shunned by Hollywood at the end, it doesn't make sense now, seeing as how Lindsay Lohan is still relevant.
AWE MAN! :(

i've worked in some. great places. awesome alternative to nursing homes if you have your wits and a few dollars (or planned wisely well beforehand).

I'll always remember him as Blanche Deveraux's first husband from a different network. Especially now that they're showing Maude re-runs every night.

perhaps the term "independent living" is to describe freedom for the kids of the elderly who do not have to care for them 24-7?
or
a comparative term relating to out-n-out nursinghome living (where you share a tiny room with another elderly stranger in a hospital bed 2 feet from your own)with hardly any freedom of choice in diet, mobility & schedule.

independent living/assisted living is swank apartments/condos where there is a 24 hr nursing staff and activity dept regularly interacting with the residents (daily, meals, meds, etc.,).
My dad is in assisted living - cool staff, nice rooms, decent meals.
From watching that THS episode I also gathered he was a kind, sensitive man who tried to guide these kids through their darkest times, especially Dana. He played his part well, and I hope he had a fulfilling life.
Willis, stay healthy.

I don't know anything about this dude in real life but I hope he was a good egg and was a kind influence in the lives of those 3 messed up children. I always got a bit of a Chester the Molester vibe from him but he was in fact probably a nice-enough closeted gay dude (because we've established that there's no such thing as a straight actor, right?).
NOOOOOOOOooooooooooooooooooo!
Another father figure Pfft!
He was the out-of-it Peepaw in Postcards From the Edge. He should have played a serial killer right after Different Strokes.
I used to be so jelly of Dana Plato's perfect French braids.
Night night, Mr. Drummond.
Assisted living is for when you have the olds, but still enough marbles to live "alone" for the most part but the complex is staffed with nurses and you are monitored and most of those places have a cafeteria like place set more like a dining hall for meals so dinners are a social gathering.

Ophelia and Meatblocks: But that's not really "independent," is it? It's just "more independent" or something.
I'ma gonna try to live independently till the end. They can drag out my stiff, cat-eaten corpse.

ahaha I hear ya - They'll have to drag me off my Acorn stair lift.
I agree though they should rename it 'slightly' independent living.

Awww.That's a shame. I'll never forget that show's E! True Hollywood Story. Sounded like it was a really depraved, depressing set where it was the only time for all of those kids and Mr. Drummond to feel like a family. And, I think that I speak for everyone when I say that the most memorable episode is the Creepy McCreepster bike shop child molester one.
Slightly off-topic - whatever happened to E! True Hollywood stories and the Hollywood Mysteries show or whatever? With Al Banza (?) I really liked them. Now all E! plays are a million Kardashian shows.

ahaha no. You have your own apartment but they have a nursing staff to give you pills and stuff.. and they check in from time to time to make sure you're still alive, I think..
==================================================
I though it was when they put you in a cage out back in the barn and poke you with a stick once in a week, if you don't move they got lucky and have a free cage for the next "independent liver"
