Mel And Michael Are Officially Out Of A Job

SCA, the company that owns Australia's 2Day FM, has permanently shut down Mel and Michael's radio show, stopped all advertising on 2Day FM and pressed pause on future pranks until further notice. Before Mel Greig and Michael Christian were handed pink slips, they gave an interview to A Current Affair and cried while apologizing to the family of the nurse who committed suicide after their royal prank.

Mel and Michael weren't paid for talking to A Current Affair, apparently. A Current Affair's Tracy Grimshaw asked them how the prank came to be and who was their target. While looking like a pile of pure sad, Mel said that the prank was just supposed to be some silly thing and nothing more. Their awful British accents were supposed to be the target of the prank. Mel thought they'd get the dial tone as soon as the receptionist heard them talking like Fat Bastard. When Nurse Jacintha Saldanha picked up the phone, because the receptionist was away, and immediately transferred the call, Mel and Michael thought they were being sent to a complaints section where all pranksters are sent. They thought every radio host in the world pranked the hospital.

Mel and Michael found out about Nurse Jacintha's death on Saturday morning and said they think of her family every single second of the day. They both said several times during the interview that even the Florida psychic who Lindsay Lohan punched couldn't have predicted that their dumb prank would've ended like this. As Mel broke down, she said this:

"There’s not a minute that goes by where we don’t think about her family and what they must be going through and the thought we may have played a part in that is gutwrenching. These prank calls are made every day, on every radio station, in every country around the world and they have been for a long time and no-one could’ve imagined this to happen."

They both played dumb when Tracy asked them about the usual protocol of their prank calls. Mel and Michael said that they're just simple pranking puppets. They do the pre-recorded prank and pass it off to whoever, and whatever happens after that is beyond their control. Since there's really no HIPAA laws in Britain, SCA says that they didn't do anything illegal, but are still cooperating with the investigation. SCA's legal department reviewed the prank before it went to air. This isn't the first prank that got 2Day FM into trouble.

As everyone has said before, this is the only time in history when I actually want to see Ashton Kutcher's face. I really wish Nurse Jacintha was still alive and that the hospital was pranking Mel and Michael back. I watched that interview waiting for Ashton to jump out and shout, "You've been PUNK'D!"

And since I am a superficial piece of trash and whatever brain cells I have left live in my ass lips, I did think to myself, "That Michael Christian dude is kind of hot."

Apparently the station 2day fm is donating advertising of $500,000 to the family. Not enough, but better than nothing I guess. The call wasn't even funny, just stupid. I can't help but feel there is more than meets the eyes here. I guess we will never know.
The only thing funny about all of this is the gutter British press who are suddenly lecturing about morality, media reponsability and media ethics. That in itself is laughable.

I think this is totally unfair for the djs. They said the prank was vetted by the radio's lawyers and ok'd before it aired. So why are the dj's taking the fall? Pure b.s.

As for the woman who took her life. I may pity her but I have no understanding for a woman who would leave her children motherless over a prank that would be forgotten in a matter of days. The dj's aren't to blame for her making such a selfish, heartless decision.

Don't feel too sorry for these two. This was only a matter of time for them. Twice before their "pranks" had to be investigated by police. One prank had a mother hook her daughter up to a lie detector machine and then the mother grilled the girl about whether or not she was still a virgin. That was how the mother found out her daughter had been raped at age 12. And these two idiots put the whole thing on the air.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
That's disgusting. How come they weren't fired for this? Karma is paying back these bitches in full.
Mrs_Fox's picture
Absolutely ridiculous, knee-jerk, reaction to a prank call. The nurse chose to take her life it has nothing to do with the radio presenters: they barely spoke to her.
thank you! it invalidated some of my first comment later, on this thread. I think I've covered all theories since this came out. :)
It's sad if it's because she measured her health by her career. They all said she was a good nurse and well liked. Even if the royals (if it's true) felt so violated and the princess wanted her (while she wasn't even performing her nurse duties) to be released subsequently, I'm quite sure she'd find another job after. It is very forgivable. I fear there must have been a lot brewing for a while, and it was the straw that broke the camels back.
btw, it was very legible.
This cultural talk is way off base. The woman is an Indian Christian. And killing herself and leaving children behind is more "dishonorable." In many parts of India, career is the measure of a persons health. she could have been an alcoholic and as long as her career is okay, no one would suspect a thing. This was not an honor suicide but a personal thing. I'm from the same culture, and this speculation, though understandable, is not necessary. our culture.doesn't discuss psychology the way the west.does (outside of very modern circles), and that exacerbated her condition, I'm sure, but saying honor suicide is sounding silly to me.
I remember pranking was really popular on the radio when I was growing up in '70s. Although I guess it really started with Candid Camera. That kind of homour of embarassing people has always repelled me. Maybe through this, "pranksters" will realize the damage they can do.
I really don't understand what's funny about humiliating other people.
I would think if the Queen murdered anyone it would be the cunt that published pictures of Kate topless.
And for those who don't believe she was murdered by the Queen, why should the Royal family have to apologize? They did nothing but expect to have a hospital stay without idiot nurses giving away information.
If this nurse offed herself over transferring a fucking phone call, she would've offered herself the first time she made a mistake as a nurse. How could this woman even be in this profession where you deal with life and death?
definitely. the victim isn't to blame either. It's awful. even when treated or when it's ineffective, they're helpless against it. I just hope, for the love of God, conspiracy theorists, it's not murder, or an ''honorable'' type suicide.
I hope, and don't think it's murder, or ''honorable'' suicide and most likely believe she was clinically depressed and left untreated.
I'm well aware. I'm playing along. Devils advocate to those who blame the DJ's who now have no jobs and receive death threats and are in hiding.
in this case, suicidal and clinically depressed or being under an influence people, who take their own lives, is no one's fault. her kids will grow up thinking they weren't good enough perhaps. I hate it.
The Royals are completely useless. Not the nurse, not the DJ's. I want a video of them saying they're sorry. If they're so above it all, but still check into a public hospital (to be like one of them) and when shit happens cause of them it's swept under the rug, then I hope when their bundle of joy is born it will be cursed. No, I don't feel bad in the slightest for my ill wishes on them.
I'm tellin' ya, Jacintha was murdered by the Royal Family. Everyone thinks the Queen is so cute and cuddly nowadays, I don't know why. She looks like a contemptuous, unfeeling cunt to me. I don't think the Royals like to be made fun of or even vaguely humanized, and I sincerely believed they offed this woman so others wouldn't be so quick to make a joke out of them from now on.
------------------------------------------------
My thoughts exactly. During this whole jubilee nonsense, I saw right through that cold cunt. She's driven everyone insane (like her sister Margaret for example) with her sanctimonious devotion to "duty."
As for the nurse being Indian, puh-lease. The Indian subcontinent was more than happy to get rid of the British in the 40s. Every Indian I know hates the royals and get a kick out of the fact that Nehru was fucking Lady Mountbatten.
P.T.Bull's picture
What they did was a pretty mild prank, and 99.999 percent of people would have laughed it off or gotten over it.
Bad luck for them that a clinically depressed woman answered the phone.
Well, I can understand the radio station wanting to move on, and perhaps they are too sad to be funny for a while anyhoo. I wish them better luck in the future.
PS. I recall howard stern hounded someone to suicide. It was much more nasty and personal, and I doubt it bothered him that much. In any case, his career moved forward and all was mostly forgotten.
Poopele's picture
This is why I never call anyone on the phone.
You never know if the crazy bastard that picks up is thinking of offing themselves and then it looks like it was your fault.
A question for Oz D-Listers--where could these two work now that they've been effectively been removed from the airways? I wouldn't be surprised to see them surface in the States with a redemption based talk show on OWN.
CodeRed's picture
be the way, who's blaming Kate Middleton Prince Andrew (?) and pointing a finger at them in all this? I hope they feel just as responsible, guilty, shedding tears and in mourning, and that they suspend themselves from their boring ass ''duties'' forever. I'm sure the palace has a place for a team of specialized nurses and doctors at their beck and call. If this is the way it's gonna go.
CashewTime.'s picture
hey IF,
I was addressing a few people who said that. It's no prob.just passing along what I know about Indian Christians. I think ppl are trying to find a reason, so the speculations make sense. What I want to know about is the royal turds' involvement, esp now that I've read what few words said below.
CodeRed's picture
I don't know if it has to do with ''honor'' in India, but it's mind baffling that she took it all on her shoulders and felt targeted and humiliated beyond redemption. Especially, being a mother and wife. Furthermore, nothing ''embarrassing'' was given out that could have shamed the palace. Or blaming the hospital and staff given the circumstances. Placing tougher or safer protocol would have sufficed. I really don't see the big deal and I hate the Palace even more for putting such pressures on ''the commoners.'' Nothing but a bunch of self entitles pricks whose sole duties are waving and smiling at crowds and getting their asses kissed worldwide. *eye roll*
would it have been such a big deal in America too, say the daughter of the president was pregnant and something like that may have slipped by a nurse, whose duty it was not even to answer the call? I can understand in airports and such, but this? No one died or was injured. would it have made the people murderous or sue the hospital? Would the secret agents be sent out to shoot the bitch down? Has the world completely lost its mind? There would have been complaints for sure and tougher regulations and protocol setup so it doesn't happen again. It's not a reason to fire, murder or kill oneself over. Tragic all around. and I hope the DJ's get therapy, cuz having a death on their conscience that's not their fault, is awful. Even if what they did may have been in bad taste. The receptionist may have just as well killed herself too for not being at her desk at the moment, and the nurse who gave out the info too. They were all supposed to have known in the midst of a crisis environment.
Aphid's picture
It's very easy to say "She shouldn't have felt like that over something so insignificant as patching the call through" if you're not familiar with or have experienced depression for yourself. You'd be surprised who has planned their own suicide, only to chicken out at the last second.
IrishFury's picture
Cashew, it was just a suggestion, I'm not stating a fact. I don't know her culture and as you would know, there are many different cultures in India. unlike say, places like Ireland or Denmark, that is more homogeneous. I know she is not Japanese but it used to be a custom there, as well as Tibet and other places. Still is, unfortunately, in some instances.
Anyway, it's a shame all round. I feel, like others, to say "suicide" within hours seems strange. Thanks for clearing up the Indian Christian thing though, I didn't know about. The few Indian friends I have are Hindu.
I don't know whether this was an actual suicide or not but I do think she was already unstable although in some cultures, committing suidice after doing something wrong is considered honorable and it restores honor back to the offended party (the Royals, in this case, at least in the mind of the person killing themselves) so potentially they could have been directly connected to the suicide although obviously they could never have known about this practise that some cultures have.
Anyway, I feel for the family and on the prank issue, I don't care much for them but pranking unsuspecting people at their work is SHITTY because it can and does cost people their jobs. Bosses don't care that it was a joke and the person was innocent.
The DJs get to feel funny and witty, meanwhile someone has lost their friggin livlihoods and there's nothing funny about that. Those aren't pranks, they are mean and can cost jobs and reputations.
Why must you resort to name calling, pig? Perhaps someone has struck a nerve, you warthog-faced buffoon. I say we fight to the pain! To the pain means the first thing you will lose will be your feet below the ankles. Then your hands at the wrists. Next your nose. Your ears you keep and I'll tell you why. So that every shriek of every child at seeing your hideousness will be yours to cherish. Every babe that weeps at your approach, every woman who cries out, "Dear God! What is that thing," will echo in your perfect ears. That is what to the pain means. It means I leave you in anguish, wallowing in freakish misery forever.
