The Hospital Nurse Who Got Duped In The Duchess Kate Prank Call Committed Suicide

The "I Don't Like Jokes" tag has never been more appropriate.

Two days ago, Australian radio hosts Mel and Michael put on their worst British accents to try to talk to Duchess Kate at the hospital she was staying in. They pretended to be Queen Elizabeth and Prince Charles and they didn't think they would get through since they butchered the British accent more than Brit Brit has. But they did get through. A hospital receptionist immediately transferred them to the nurse taking care of Duchess Kate. And now that hospital receptionist is dead.

The Daily Mail said that her body was found this morning at an address really near King Edward VII Hospital where she worked. When the paramedics showed up to the address, she had already passed away and they couldn't revive her. Scotland Yard is treating her death as a suicide. And no, now is not the time for our MI6 jokes.

The hospital hasn't commented on this, but yesterday, a spokesperson for the hospital spoke out about the prank and called it "foolish" and said they were reviewing telephone protocol. Mel and Michael also released a statement yesterday saying they were sorry and didn't think their prank would go very far:

"We were very surprised that our call was put through. We thought we'd be hung up on as soon as they heard our terrible accents. We’re very sorry if we’ve caused any issues and we’re glad to hear that Kate is doing well."

Damn, and the hospital receptionist had a husband and two kids. One minute, she's falling for a dumb prank and the next minute she's committing suicide. That escalated quickly. Duchess Kate hasn't even been knocked up for five seconds and a life has already been lost. Sadness all around.

UPDATE: A spokesperson for King Edward VII Hospital said that the nurse who was found dead is Jacintha Saldanha. Answering the main line wasn't even part of Nurse Jacintha's duties. The receptionist needed to step away from the phones, so Nurse Jacintha was helping her out. In a statement, Prince William and Duchess Kate said their "thoughts and prayers are with Jacintha Saldanha’s family, friends and colleagues at this very sad time."

Exactly! I'm constantly surprised by people's lack of coping skills. I just learned last night that a 13 year old girl hung herself on a tree at the park 1 block from my house! Her sister did the same thing 2 years ago. All due to school bullying. When will people learn that killing yourself, rather than fighting back is not the answer. Value and fight for your life FFS!

Bill Maher makes fun of everyone, comedians constantly poke fun at people - at any given point someone is humiliated and made fun of in that matter, like i said, there are entire tv shows and programs aimed at pranking people an we all laugh and it is funny. Now if someone is unstable and commits suicide that is on THEM not the prankster. the brits dont have a sense of humor when it comes to the queen. They fucking take this royalty shit seriously - if they could they would transport themselves back to royal times and be willing minions of the royal court. so possible mental instability + strange devotion to the queen + being publicly pranked + possible harassment by co workers and hospital management = suicide.

Sad. In today's world, it's alarming how someone can go from completely anonymous to world famous in a matter of hours, with no control over the situation. Like the homeless, shoeless guy.

I wouldn't be surprised if she got death threats. There are some people in England (and Australia) who take the royals very seriously and would consider it the biggest travesty that someone got through to the hospital with a prank call.

True. If anything it's the security officer at the hospital who should be mortified and fired for improper training of their staff. Still have to say these pranks are stupid. The radio stations are not likely to change anything though unless they're fined. Of course, the DJ's couldn't have foreseen this happening, and yet it did cause a lot of damage to this one person and her family. I hope they recognize how unfortunate this is. Jmo.

The prank was dumb, but it wasn't sinister or hateful.

The nurse must have had prior problems to take her life over it. When you are in a sad or difficult place in your life it doesn't take much to tip you over the edge.

Public humiliation as well as the threat of losing your job is a lot to deal with at the best of times. It's very sad.

I have no idea how you came upon that conclusion. A nurse lets out too much information and suddenly the hospital has "nothing" in place as far as security/patient privacy goes? You're telling me that the hospital has no protocols at all? How do you figure that? It just sounds like a nurse was being stupid and let out too much information.
===========================================
The call should have been screened in the first place before it even got to the nurse. If all it takes is some DJ to say "put me through to the nurse" and you say "OK no probs, here's the nurse" then I call that NO SECURITY AT ALL.

Now unless I'm missing part of the conversation there is nothing to suggest there was any screening all none zip.

The bottom line that call should never ever have gotton to the nurse in the first place. The nurse should never have been in a position to let ANY information out.

I am sorry, but killing yourself over a prank call is very fucking stupid. This nurse Jacintha should have checked herself in to a hospital if she was having those feelings.

Also, fuck Kate Middleton. Dumbass bitch did nothing to become famous. She's worthless. She's even worse than Kim Kardashian, because at least Kim K starred in a homemade porno.

I'm with those who think there was more at play and not just extreme embarrassment over the prank. All she did was transfer the call to the nurse and it was the nurse who actually did the blabbing. The hospital is the only to blame since there was nothing in place to prevent phone calls from being passed on to the private nurse. You would think that the royals would at least have some kind of password or code that would identify them. The DJs shouldn't be blamed. How did they know that their ridiculously bad accents would actually get through? A clusterf**k all around.

Bossy's picture

Okay, I'm out for the day. Last thing: although I don't think it's the fault of the DJs and I do think the lady was unstable I agree that this is a tragedy for the family and I hope they find some sort of comfort in whatever way they can--a death is always heartbreaking for a family, suicide or not, long coming or sudden, provoked or unprovoked.

Bossy's picture

@snowpiece, there's another funny Brazilian prank out there now. They have two sets of twins. One twin of each set in the bathroom open to the public and the other two twins in the prank bathroom. In between the two bathrooms they have a glass window that looks like a mirror. So one girl is getting ready in front of the mirror as the person to be pranked comes in. They look in the "mirror" and notice that they have no reflection even though the person there does (because her twin is on the other side of the glass). It's great. Then they have the other twins join, one comes in and fixs her hair (and her twin is on the other side of the glass doing the same thing). So now the person really is weirded out because 2 people have reflections but they don't. I would put a link but I guess this isn't the moment everyone wants to see a prank. There are several versions of the mirror prank (German, Brazilian, Korean) on youtube though if you care for it.

johnnysgirl's picture

Fuck the djs? Fuck the royals and their celebrity and the media that feeds it. That's why this woman took her life. She was prop being harassed by thousands of fools who buy into it and have lost all sense. I wouldn't be surprised if she got death threats. Fuck this world.

Ugh I'm not a lawyer, but I think it'd be an easy civil suit if you can prove damages.

Criminal? Not so sure.
********************
I am a lawyer, civil, but here in the states. It sounds like a slam dunk, but here this would be a definite reach. It would be a negligence claim, and the first bar would be foresight. It is impossible to believe that this prank would result in suicide. I know many attorneys who'd take the case, but it hardly reaches the elements of Duty-Breach-Cause-Harm.
(DJs have no duty to the nurse, therefore there was no breach, and it would probably be easy to show the poor woman either had suicidal ideations or depression prior and therefore hard to show cause. Harm is obvious, but too attenuated.)

Whamo's picture

It doesn't matter if we see the prank as being childish, not childish, part of their job, not part of their job, stupid, funny, irresponsible whatever.. THE CALL SHOULD NEVER HAVE GOTTEN THOUGH, PERIOD.

louise_brooks's picture

So very sad. Rest in peace and hopefully in time her family heals.

Janetrenowins's picture

I don't know how the shifts are over there, but most nurses I have worked with at hospitals are on 12 hour shifts. Most either come off like they are on the verge of punching someone, actually murdering someone or slitting their own wrists. It's probably a combo of fear of being fired or sued, stress from work, not enough sleep and finally snapping because that was just the final straw. Yes the prank was stupid but honestly if the bank screwed up and didn't deposit her paycheck on time it probably would have had the same effect. If your suicidal, somethings always going to be that final thing that sets you over the edge. I doubt she just woke up and immediately felt the urge to off herself over a prank. Also, our hospital never actually transfers you to a nurse directly, not ones that work the floors. You can however be directed to family. I'm pretty sure in a high profile case they would just take messages, as it would be expected to have the press trying to get info.

I'm sorry but I have to disagree with you on this.
IMO It is 100% the hospitals fault. They had absolutely NO security protocols at all. It is their responsibility and there's alone to do due diligence in keeping the Royals safe while in their charge. If all it takes is a simple phone call and your people put the call though it is a MASSIVE fail on your part. If the DJ had to work their asses off to circumvent the security and tricked their way through that would be different but they didn't.

It doesn't matter if it was a phone call or if someone was delivering "mail...flowers" whatever there HAD to be checks and balances set up by the hospital before you make contact with a Royal. It appears there were absolutely none so the blame is on the hospital and the hospital alone.

again just my opinion :P

The fact of the matter is, the prank phone call made by those DJ's was extremely childish and I don't buy their claims that they never thought their call would get very far. Obviously, they were hoping their call WOULD get through to someone that would give them information, otherwise they wouldn't have placed it in the first place. Some DJ's do a lot of stupid stuff, all in the name of trying to be funny or provocative. Anyone else remember those DJ's that had contestants drinking a large amount of water that ultimately killed one of the contestants? The woman that died as a result of that incident was trying to win a Wii system for her kids. None of us knows what this nurse was dealing with as a result of her actions with handling this phone call. I'm guessing the flack she took must have been tremendous to result in this action.

What's more sad than the fact that 10,000 animals got euthanized today? The fact that because of the ignorance of humans, it will happen again tomorrow. End the cycle. Spay and neuter your pets & please adopt your next pet from a shelter.

People get pranked all the time. There are entire TV shows around how people are pranked. Imagine if everyone committed ssuicide as a result? The DJs arent responsbile, if anything the royals are for instilling this feeling of total loyalty onto everyone to the point that they think after such a thing they need to off themsleves.
..
--------------------
Thanks, but did you mean to direct that toward me? If so, it may be because I cosigned the statement that it just takes a little push for someone to go over the edge, and no one knows if another is standing on the ledge at any given time.

I'm not blaming the DJ's, I am sure that scrutiny from those close to her and those who don't know her was just too much for this lady.

And I prank people, too. Ask anyone who has been a visitor in my house since my son was six years old (and found out that a chewed up tootsie roll looks like a turd).

I believe the nurse (not the one who died) gave out additional, more personal details that were NOT broadcast or published. So it would appear that the DJs did not cut their prank short before it went south.

I consider myself to have a really good sense of humor, but I can't with pranks cause they usually tend to be mean spirited. This is real unfortunate all around. I too work in healthcare like Cowjam & Impertinent Vixen said, most hospitals have real strict privacy policies, especially when there's a person of renown or a sensitive case.

Bossy's picture

Right, no more pranks of any sort anymore, like EVER. *eye roll* Just last week the Brazilian elevator prank was viral. People loved that, it was funny. Everyone loves a joke, and this DJ thing wasn't even cruel. The elevator thing could have caused a heart attack--did you see the lady bawling her eyes out first with just the lights going off then seeing the girl? Yet, she's still alive because she's mentally stable and when she was told it was a joke (despite everyone in the world seeing her overreaction) she was OKAY.

mslewis's picture

Lord, honey, it wasn't that bad!! I don't understand why she would kill herself over this. Kate wasn't hurt and no real info was given out. Poor woman was probably being harrassed by her co-workers. Poor thing. Now, maybe those DJs should be punished somehow. Pranks are just not very funny when it ends in a person's death.

Look, people who are thinking of committing suicide will go over the edge for whatever they feel seems like the end of it all while everyone else thinks that same occurrence sucks but, oh well. Example: I knew some couple in college, they were dating and they liked each other but had some issues. One night the girl broke up with the guy, nothing dramatic but just that it wasn't going to work out, they had been dating for maybe a year. The next day we all find out he committed suicide. I mean, your bf/gf breaking up with you sucks but now the fact that you broke up means you're responsible for their suicide? Come on. Of course they found his journals in his room which showed clear signs of instability. DJs didn't mean to hurt anyone and they didn't do anything vicious--especially to the receptionist, the girl didn't mean to hurt the guy, you wouldn't tell her that she should watch her back because she's responsible for his death and neither were the DJs.

dbella's picture
