Larry Hagman Has Passed Away

All together now: NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! NOT J.R. EWING! NOT MAJOR NELSON!

Just when J.R. Ewing was starting to slay young hos on the reboot of Dallas, he has floated up to heaven at the age of 81. Dallas News says that around 4:20pm on Friday, Larry Hagman's glorious angel wing eyebrows spread and took flight. Larry died at Medical City Dallas Hospital from complications of his battle with cancer. Larry's family released this statement:

“Larry was back in his beloved Dallas, re-enacting the iconic role he loved most. Larry’s family and close friends had joined him in Dallas for the Thanksgiving holiday. When he passed, he was surrounded by loved ones. It was a peaceful passing, just as he had wished for. The family requests privacy at this time.”

Linda Gray and Patrick Duffy were both at Larry Hagman's side at the time of his death.

If you don't know Larry Hagman from Dallas, slap yourself, because everybody should know that. But Larry Hagman, who was the son of Broadway legend Mary Martin, was also Major Nelson in I Dream of Jeannie. Larry is survived by his wife, Maj Axelsson, and two children, Heidi and Preston.

What is Dallas going to do now?! It's nothing without J.R. Ewing. I'm about to type the words I never though I'd ever type: Rest in peace, J.R. Ewing. And does Kristin Shepard have an alibi, because if she doesn't, the police should question her ass.

Cheers to Major Nelson,
The first gorgeous, emotionally unavailable prick I ever fell for.

And to JR, one of the great villains of my childhood. I think it's appropriate that I had my first sip of a dirty gin martini while my mother watched Dallas.

Remember Tony Millionaire? IDOJ was a standard of my childhood. RIP.

He seemed like a really good guy, and I remember watching re-runs of I dream of Jeannie and boy, he was handsome as all get out.

Saw him a week ago tonight at Sheree Wilson's home. He looked good, a little thinner than normal, but still had that great evil smile!

Rest in sweet peace, Larry....

Sorry to hear this. Mr. Hagman was a fine actor and a unique personality. I remember the good old Dallas days when he was on his first liver. He drank 4 bottles of top shelf champagne a day while working on that show. I say if you're going to kill your liver that is one classy way to do it.

I Dream of Larry! RIP, sir, a true legend.

RIP, Larry. I remember my Mom and Grandma used to watch Dallas,it was on when I was super young so I don't remember it, but they both loved it.

I did watch I Dream Of Jeannie reruns though so I will always remember him as Major Nelson.

I admired how he got around the talk show circuit to promote this latest "Dallas". He knew he was on borrowed time and he made the most of it.

81 is a good age to go. 80 seems to be the turning point when people just start to lose everything. I'm going out on my 80th birthday in an overdose of sleeping pills, like "Harold and Maude."

Major Nelson---loved him as a kid.
JR--a role that will stand the test of time.
Mr. Hagman--a gentleman. So glad he was able to revived his JR role, if only for a bit of time.
RIP Mr. Hagman

I also do this when people are leaving after Thanksgiving, every time. They need to be told to shut up! I am sure that was the case for your T-giving too. He was only doing what needed to be done!

Oh no! This is sad. He will be missed. Goodbye Larry.

Can anyone tell me how his wife's first name is pronounced?

"Mayj"?

Rhymes with "vag"? <-- that one gets my vote

Hahaha! Pronounced "my" I believe.

R.I.P. Larry, you were the villain of my childhood...

I really enjoyed watching Dallas in the late 70s, early 80s. Loved to hate jr along with the rest of the viewers. The re-boot? Meh.

And major nelson--another jewel from my youth when there was only three channels on tv. Even though I was like 12 years old at the time, I kept thinking if I had that genie under my control, sexual things would be going on. At the very least, get her to take her clothes off. ;)

That was sad about Comacho. At first he was expected to live, but then suddenly took a turn for the worst.

I didn't realize he was as young as he was. Thought he was closer to Leon Isaac Kennedy's age.

Yeah, I'm bummed about this, but he had a great life. He used to have a parade in his Malibu neighborhood for the hell of it. He owned his mistakes. He had one only one wife who had Alzheimers and he took care of her. Who does that in Hollywood? Loved him in Dallas and IDOJ.

RIP awesome man.

Hector Camacho died, too.

I was just reading that! He was only 50 and he was shot while sitting in a parked car? That's dodgy.

Btw, thanks for your nice comment in the Gabriel/Olivier punch up thread. The latest pix show that Gabriel really got the worst of that throw-down. He's got major boo-boos.

Rest in peace, Larry, and thanks. Loved his work; excellent bad guy of all stripes. J.R. Ewing was one of the the most fascinating antagonists ever. I agree with others that he was underrated as a comic actor.

"Dallas" was a must-watch television series in my home back in the 80's. My mother loved the show, and adored J.R. Ewing.

When I hear news of passings like Larry Hagman's, while I sincerely feel sad they're no longer on the earth, I wonder how much of my sadness stems from the fact that their deaths are a grim reminder to me that my own life here, that time itself, is fleeting. Also that my own youth is long passed.

My eyebrows raised quite a bit this summer, when I read Barbara Eden's autobiography. While she and Hagman got along alright, she certainly made it very clear that the man was an egotistical asshole, a diva and a control freak. She claims he was pretty brutal to other cast members, the director, writers, and guest stars. Just sayin'.

Then, you have Linda Gray and Patrick Duffy at his bedside, which was admirable. So, I guess the pendulum swung both ways where Larry Hagman was concerned.

RIP my youth.

Rest in peace.

RIP, fellow stoner. He was a pro and an environmentalist who stayed married to the same woman, the latter no small feat in Hollywood.

RIP.You will be missed.

I understand he was an advocate of the good shit. He was also buddies with Peter Fonda in the day.
How fitting he passed at 4:20.

Oh, sad. Is nice that he got to relive his J.R role one more time, that probably thrilled him to bits.

RIP Mr Hagman.

The sads. LH actually was a very decent actor who could do much more than the wonderful JR shtick (f. ex. in "Primary colors"). And a very decent human being too. RIP.

DAE is here! And Preferred username! Sorry, I get a kick out of seeing the rare Dlisters.

OT: my kids apparently* taught my nephew to say "stupid" and "shut up". I have cemented my place in the family as World's Worst Mother. When the Thanksgiving guests were leaving, instead of saying "goodbye" he yelled "SHUT UP" to each one. It was so hard not to laugh (so I did).

* SIL swears he NEVER heard those words spoken until this weekend. Yeah, they never hear those words at school.

ETA: those words are forbidden in my house and I have literally washed people's mouths out with soap for calling each other stupid and idiot. But I'm sure they say those things when I'm not around.

Great to see he gave his fans their fave JR for one last time. As they say, great actors don't die, they simply make timely exits.

I am an old dust bunny, because I remember when "Who shot J.R.?" was at a fever pitch. I loved him as J.R. (and he was a hottie in IDoJ too!) and he was the reason I begged my babysitters to let me stay up to watch Dallas. I just read about his death and actually got sad.

RIP J.R.
