I think the very first was Brando and I think Brando was considerably more influential than Dean but yes he was of the first generations of the Method Men and I agree the method style gave us a more authentic portrayal of characters...I just thought he was whiny.
As far as acting goes, Hepburn's 5 Oscar nominations and one win speak for themselves. Add 3 nominations and 2 wins from the New York Film Critics. And a Tony Award for Best Stage Actress. The Golden Globes are too long to list. Finished up with a Screen Actors Guild lifetime achievement award.

Actors in the 40s & 50s especially worked with different dialogue, the cadence and rhythm of their speaking was unique to that era and you just can't compare them to today's actors. Take a James Cagney who most would agree was fantastic actor but if you took that style and tried to do it in our modern cinema people might just say "that guy sucks". Old movies for the most part were very melodramatic but that's just the way it was.
Now if we are going to trash icons I throw my "overrated" tag on James Dean. I never understood the appeal of him. I understand the "rebel" aspect to his legacy and at the time youth had few rebels in film but I just found his acting way WAY over the top even taking into consideration the times. To me Dean was a whiney crybaby on film and if he hadn't died so young and tragically I wonder if he'd be seen in the same light.

The my fair lady dress is a work of art. The modern version is a cheap satire of the same. Look at how the waist band is angled down as if to show that kidman has a pot-belly that is making it sag.
