I tutor upper middle class kids, and they all have smart phones, iPads, the whole bit. And just like smartphones were normalized by the half of this country that could afford them despite THIS economy, that effect trickling down to very, very young kids (as young as 10). With the kids in school, having a smart phone or iPad could give them access to study partners and quick research and homework assistance without having to go home or take longer to reach someone on facebook, and so the regular kids will eventually think they need one. I avoided a smart phone when my family got one because I was on unemployment at the time, and then I was bought one during Christmas and was very annoyed because I couldn't afford the bill. But when I got one I realized how behind I was, even with finding out news. I love mine now, but i can afford it. This mom can not. How fast technology is advancing frustrates me because it leaves so many people behind or just broke. Sorry for the long treatise, but I think about this often when working.
