My friends in Northern California seem to have it much better when it comes to seeing their tax dollars actually being used to improve the environment around them.

That's interesting because as a native Northern Californian I can tell you the perception is that most of our state taxes are taken and spent in LA while we have to locally raise money if we want to do anything. ESPECIALLY with roads. We almost never get money for roads. Although I will admit that *some* of that might be our bitterness over LA taking all of our water and wasting it so we have to have water rationing while people in LA live in the desert and have lawns.

I never completely understood where my taxes were going when I lived there. Seemed to me they were being used more to have a million elections per year rather than actually implementing much beyond environmental issues, especially in Los Angeles County. I think even if it were the same age, it could go beyond just curiousity if there is any sort of power structure or previous abuse.
