George Papadapolis Has Passed Away

"Then came yoooooooo" is what the angels in the admitting office in heaven will sing today when Alex Karras struts in. Alex Karras, better known to us children of the 80s as Webster's dad, died in Los Angeles early this morning after anything and everything fucked with his health. Alex had kidney disease, dementia, heart disease and stomach cancer. Just yesterday, Alex was in the hospital and his family was saying that his condition was looking grim. A spokesperson for Alex's family told CNN that he was surrounded by his family right before he grabbed Webster's balloons to fly up to the afterworld. Alex was 77.

Before Alex became a DILF on Webster, he was an NFL star and was the defensive lineman for the Detroit Lions for 12 seasons and then played for the Los Angeles Rams. A knee injury is what ended Alex's NFL career and that's when his journey to becoming George started. Alex was in The Godfather, played horse-puncher Mongo in Blazing Saddles and was the gay bodyguard in Victor/Victoria. In 1983, Alex got the role of Webster's dad and his real-life wife Susan Clark played Webster's mom. And history was made!

Alex was still married to Susan Clark at the time of his death.

Rest in peace, George Papadapolis. A little part of the 80s just died today.

R.I.P. Alex Karras. It's sadness to hear he was so ill, poor man. Condolences to his family. :(

Sans Fards, great article on Derek Boogaard. Thanks for the link. What a sad, sad story. He reminded me of the late, great hockey fighter John Krodic, who was actually a friend of mine in juniors. You couldn't find a nicer, sweeter guy, who was thrust into the role of a fighter if he wanted to play in the NHL. The John who died was no one I knew...he was a wonderful guy. So sad what athletics does to young kids.

Hockey fan's picture

The recent article in Sports Illustrated about quarterback Jim McMahon having early-onset dementia from all his concussions was really interesting. They mentioned other players too. And hockey is facing the same thing. Bob Probert's widow sent his brain to the institute studying CTE, and it turns out he had it too. This is going to be a huge thing in both hockey and football when it comes out.

Hockey fan's picture

Fuck, that's a shitty-ass way to go out for a great guy. Getting old sucks. I'm taking my own way out.
RIP Alex-- and congrats on a long-ass Hollywood marriage.

Loved him in Victor/Victoria.

Bummer. I don't think Webster was a Different Strokes rip-off per se. Just another safe 80s show with a black kid. There was no white daughter, and big brother. And no Charlotte Rae. RIP.
BTW, Jim McMahon is divorced, that's his girlfriend with him on the SI cover.

RIP.
I remember him best as the red neck sheriff in "Porky's".

And not to forget Susan Clark's role as the hooker in the Everglades! (In Porky's as well)

RIP Mongo.

Football may have played a role in his condition, but as a football fan, I would hate to see football banned or become a water-down version of the game. There is no telling if he didn't play football if he would have been okay. Plenty of folks get dementia never walked a mile, much less played sports.

My mom started developed symptoms of early dementia at age 55. She never played contact sports or had any head trauma. It's just bad luck.

He wasn't in The Godfather. I Googled and all I could find was that teammates called him that.

another victim of the brual NFL, I am glad he was in the lawsuit against them for head injuries....in ten years most of today's players will be brain injured without a doubt cause they are bigger now than they were back in the day and sack harder....

SANS FARDS's picture

stefystef, exactly....that role needs to be done away with, completely.

Was he in the farting scene in "Blazing Saddles"? I think maybe he was. If so, this news is sadder still.

This article on Derek Boogaard, the NY Rangers enforcer, who was revealed to have early onset dementia after his death, is one of the saddest things I've ever read. Long, but well worth the read:

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/12/04/sports/hockey/derek-boogaard-a-boy-lea...

***************************************************************

I read the article, thanks for sharing. It is very sad. He died at 28, but he's been fighting (or really made to fight) since he was a kid.

The concept of the enforcer really needs to be changed. There are too many cases coming up. My Canadian friend agrees.

But technology and better equipment must be used to protect players from injury and possible future health problem.

Hockey has the same problems involving players' suffering early onset dementia from taking too many extreme hits. But that's easier solved in hockey, where all they have to do is really start penalizing violent checks and breaking up fights instead of egging the players on, like they do now. Hopefully they'll get really serious about that because the excessive violence is turning lots of fans away from the game.

Lisbet459 -- IKR? Poor man, why did he have to have all that happen to him? Yet other pieces of shit walk the earth disease free, spreading fuckery wherever they go (I'm looking at you, Lohans). RIP, Mr. Karras.

If anyone is interested in dementia brought on by football injuries, I just heard that Jim McMahon, formerly of the Chicago Bears, is suffering from it. He is only 53.

The early onset dementia (77 is pretty young for dementia) was probably a result of all the football head traumas. Like Muhammad Ali has Parkinson's from boxing head traumas.
============

Actually, early onset dementia is anything before the age of 65. 71 isn't that early although, from what little I know of the NFL, his football career didn't help:

"The prevalence of dementia among individuals aged 71 and older was 13.9%, comprising about 3.4 million individuals in the USA in 2002. The corresponding values for AD were 9.7% and 2.4 million individuals. Dementia prevalence increased with age, from 5.0% of those aged 71-79 years to 37.4% of those aged 90 and older."

We posted the same thing at the same time (about football dementia), incase you think I was copying you. And I agree, the NFL should have to pay for their dementia related medical bills.
