Sahara Davenport Died Of Heart Failure
Sahara Davenport (born name: Antoine Ashley) of RuPaul's Drag Race flew up to heaven on the wings of his wig on Monday and his mother wrote on his Facebook page that he passed away from heart failure at John Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. Sahara's mother says he was 27 years old. Sahara's partner in glitter and everything else, Manila Luzon from RuPaul's Drag Race season 3, also released a statement on his Facebook page:
“Antoine lived to entertain the world as Sahara Davenport, and the world was in awe over his extreme talent. But his heart is what made us all fall in love with him. To me he will always be my best friend, my hero, my Diva, and I have always considered myself more than lucky to have him be forever a part of my life. Thank you, hon, for bringing so much beauty to all of us. Your legacy lives on in me and all of us you've touched."
Sahara's Facebook page has information about a public memorial and where to send donation to his mother for funeral services.
I hope that Sahara wore that ensemble in the picture above for her trip to heaven, because Jesus, God and all the saints need to see a tuck tool that also creates a double camel toe. They just need to see it up close.

Am I the only one who thinks that heart failure could be the result of an eating disorder. Most drag queens a very skinny in comparison to other males and bullimia and anorexia can both lead to heart failure. Throw in a little bit of partying and it could be a recipe for disaster.

The terms as ba-buttons understands things...
Transvestite - a person who identifies and generally lives, dresses etc. as the opposite sex.
------------------------------------------------
Your definition of transvestite is really a definition of transgender. Most people who identify, dress and live as the gender other than the one they were born with would be offended if you called them transvestites, as that term is mostly used in reference to sexual behavior and porn, not a person's day to day life.
Heart failure could be caused by anything. But sometimes it just happens. A close colleague of my sister is 28 and one night while laying on her stomach in bed reading a book she faceplanted on the pillow and her heart just stopped. She only reason she didn't literally drop dead was because her partner just got out of the shower, walked back in the room and knew how to give cpr. Scary.
I don't see the point in speculation. Finding out exactly what ailment caused his heart failure is going to do what for our lives. I had a 3 year old neice that died from heart failure brought on by valve and vein issues. No drugs...no HIV. Maybe he didn't want it discussed.....

OK, but that doesn't really mean anything. Everyone who dies, dies of heart failure. Something happens whether it be illness, trauma or the results of old age, then your heart fails.

Wow, he really mastered the tuck & tape in that photo!!
For the last time people, Sahara was not trans; he was a drag queen, a fierce one at that. Also, he admitted previous heavy drug use, which could of ultimately worsened any vascular or heart conditions. Heart failure is a very ambiguous cause, and its left more questions than answers.Perhaps his Methodist family is trying to protect an image.
Awwwww hey moomarse!! xoxo

I'm gonna go ahead and go there...

I get where you're coming from, and it's a valid theory ~ but it happens even without HIV in the mix.
I have friends with heart deficiencies and are not even near being 30, but yes, they've carried them through their childhoods, Sahara might've been in the same category... myself, I have Meniere's disease and that's rare on someone below 30 too :/
Anyway, this is very sad and hopefully Sahara/Antoine's family is being enveloped in love during this hard times for them.

I doubt it. At 27, heart failure would be rare but it has happened. No reason to think otherwise, who knows. It's still way too young to die. R.I.P.

I'm gonna go ahead and go there...and no this has NOTHING to do with his/her orientation, but could this have been HIV related? Yes, people still become and are infected in this day and age but it is much more of a "private" disease (as it should be). Heart failure at 27 is possible, but is rare. I feel like family and friends sometimes use other diagnoses to cover up a more serious illness. I remember thinking the same thing about George Michael when he got really sick a while back and was basically on his death bed with pneumonia. Either way, I commend their privacy and wish them nothing but peace and comfort in their time of grief.

Yes, I agree with your definitions, but drag queens usually aren't any of these. They are gay men who perform in a gay art form - drag.
Ba-buttons, I mentioned in the first post about Sahara that I heard a woman who works with the trans community say on the radio that the life expectancy of the trans person is shockingly short. Sadly I had to stop listening to the broadcast but I wondered why. Assumed it was violence against them, or drug use or suicide. The wear and tear of hormone use makes a lot of sense, though.
It must be very difficult to live that life.
The terms as ba-buttons understands things...
Transgendered - a person actively transitioning from one sex to another. May or may not ultimately result in surgical reassignment surgery.
Transvestite - a person who identifies and generally lives, dresses etc. as the opposite sex.
Cross-dresser - a person whom, for fetish indulgence or sexual or social pleasure, situationally dresses as the opposite sex. May or may not involve identifying as the opposite sex. For example, cross-dressing is a fairly common fetish among straight men.

Heart failure means his heart was not pumping appropriately, which causes fluid to accumulate in the lungs, heart, legs, arms, etc. because the heart isn't circulating blood well. I'm surprised someone so young and thin was diagnosed with it. It usually happens in obese people or the elderly.
MissJane - no flame - but I think they were just a committed gay couple who were both professional entertainers.

Stoney,
I think transvestite and cross-dresser refer to the same phenomenon- men who like to dress as women regardless of sexual orientation. The latter term seems to me to be less inflammatory while the former has a negative connotation because of how it's been used in the past as a slander.

What's the "extreme talent" his friend speaks of? I've never seen Drag Race and I had never heard of Sahara before his passing, so I wasn't sure what he did for a living.

I'm sure you have access to google and youtube.
Excuse me for being snarky but do you really need someone else to answer this for you?

*I think* that transgendered people feel like they are in the wrong body and that they truly identify with the opposite sex. Cross dressers just dress in the opposite sex's clothing for fun.
I believe Sahara was transgendered but I could be wrong. I think she and her partner both lived as women.
Feel free to flame me experts :)

Honest question: what's the difference between a cross dresser and a transvestite? I know transgendered people identify with or change to the opposite sex, but all the titles are confusing to me. I am sincerely asking. And was Antoine a transvestite or transgender or a gay man who liked to cross dress? It doesn't matter, but I am curious. His poor mom. :(

27 is too young to die.
I haven't graduated from medical school (or high school), but heart failure is a generic diagnosis that covers all sorts of sins. When your plane crashes or you drown, you in a sense die of heart failure.
I think you need to see the official death certificate to have a better idea. And even then there's no telling what a sympathetic doc might put on it.
There are heart problems that are purely genetic. Toddlers, Teens, 20-30 somethings can have heart attacks for reasons that do not include drugs or the kinds of diseases people whisper about.

She was a trained dancer. She studied at SMU in Dallas which has an amazing dance program that is hard to get into (at least it used to be)..so she had to be pretty good.

worked for JHU for a little while....sorry, heart failure smells of cocaine or another stimulant, but 27 is still too young...RIP
So sad to lose someone with so much talent & heart in what they do. Hugs to he's family. xoxo

My neighbour is a transgendered lady and she told me that early death is commonplace in her community.
It's the massive doses of hormones, wicked hard on the heart. Not sure, but I think Sahara was a transvestite. I think hormone treatment is prevalent in that community as well.

Man that's way too young to die. I have no clue who he is, did he sing or dance as well or something?
Too young. I'm glad Drag Race will be doing tributes to her.
His poor mom. (Or her mom; I'm not being snarky.). There is nothing more awful than outliving a child. My heart goes out to her.
That is much too young to die.
Fuck. That's sad as hell.

And with this post and the last one, Dlisters are staring at crotches just a little more than usual this evening.

Wow, I wonder what happened? Maybe this was some kind of heart defect that he was born with? I know that happens?
Poor guy. His Mom must be so devastated.
RIP, Sahara!
Heart failure at 27?! I can't with these sad posts today.
