Hot Slut Of The Day!
The amazing plasma globe that boggled minds in the late 80s and early 90s!
A visit to Spencer's Gifts in the mall wasn't complete for my early 90s self until I spent a good minute getting hypnotized by the plasma globe. You'd put your finger on the globe and all those things that look like electrified pink sperm fishes with extra long tails would come at it. There was always a line to play with that shit and some sucio motherfucker would always ruin it for everyone by putting his tongue on it and that sucio motherfucker may or may not have been me.
The plasma lamp was first invented by Nikolas Tesla for studying high voltage stuff and the one we all played with in the 90s was designed by Bill Parker. You can still buy one at Spencer's, Sharper Image and other fine stores that only sell the most useful products.
You know, the people who make this shit should take it to the next level by coming out with plasma globe anal beads and plasma dildos. Scientologists are placing their pre-orders now.

Sharper Image went out of business so good luck buying anything from there.
I like my men like I like my syrup---thick and rich!
I got distracted by the little chubby in the middle.I thought it was a shrine to tinymeat.
C6 ...your brain is the sexy.
the closest spencers to me is about 20 miles from where i live, but every time i go into that mall, i don't feel right unless i do the obligatory spencer run through...usually i'm with my mother for extra fun...

i heard that if you were nude and touched the plasma globe, your pubes stand up as well.
Thank you... Being played by Bowie .. Too cool. I grew up on the spoon fed myth of Edison. Patent and copyright law . While in place.. You have to have someone to enforce it... So The Song Remains the Same...
My issues now have issues.. So take a number.

Well, one thing he got over Edison on: he was played by DAVID BOWIE! Take that, Edison!

I'm here to kick ass and drink tea. And I'm all out of tea.
C6 if you are stil here... Is there anything you would recommend if I wanted to learn more about Tesla?

Tesla was pummeled into obscurity by Edison and the "1%" of the late 1800s. This is a fker who devised alternate current (AC). He understood EMF. The govt/mil ransacked the HNYer hotel for his books. The t-event was off of his theory. (http://science.nasa.gov/science-news/science-at-nasa/2008/30jun_tunguska...)
"Tesla theorized that our planet could potentially be utilized as a giant conductor." http://voices.yahoo.com/nikola-tesla-thomas-edison-genius-the-912459.htm...
Tesla's knowledge was correct; sold out to no one; died in poverty.

Ha. I remember these things. Spencers was always full of cool, but worthless, crap.
I did see my first naked man a Spencers, though. He was on a naughty birthday card. The guy was hung like my Percheron. I was scared.
LOL at MK tonguing the thing. I have a feeling that Spencers store has more things people put in their mouths and back on the shelf than any other.
Sorry but I'm team lava lamp.

OMGMK,
These were right behind the shirt aisle that has Megadeth tees and Married With Children ones that said, "I DATED KELLY BUNDY"!
Ps- what were those hourglass paperweights with the little colored drops of lava called??

Hey there! Buddha from Spencer's? Hahahahaha.
; )
A nugget of wisdom from my shift at Spencer's today:
Random guy: "Hey, these are the dildos we always see in those Asian pornos!"
We hear things like that, go into the back room, and judge the shit out of everyone.

Zambonie, do you know of The Oatmeal? He has a passionate love for Tesla as well. He's trying to raise money for a Tesla museum. Right up your alley.

I love The Oatmeal! :-)
Also, I remember reading an article on Tesla in, I believe, Smithsonian Magazine many years ago that said basically the same thing you're all saying, Tesla did it all before Edison. And also that he had an odd aversion to pearls, the jewelry, for some reason.

This was the first gift my boyfriend (now husband) bought me back in 1987 when we were dating ;) I still have it AND it works.. I love it. And it's fun to photograph!
Spencer's FTW! Every suburban kid from the late 80s, early 90s knows the shenanigans that went on in that store.

Yes, Dog! The slowly changing colors were so mesmerizing. My dentist had one of those, too. It was almost worth getting cavities for.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^
For serious? Geez, all my dentist had was a solar-powered bird that would dip its beak in a glass of water.

@MickeyHolland
Ah yes, and they had the fiber optic Disney World wands. At least that's the first place I saw one. And then mine broke and my sister waved her's around like a mofo for the rest of the trip to piss me off.
HAHAHA, Mickey, EVERY Italian restaurant in the late 80`s had one!!! I never got into em, but i loved this little three light disco thingie that my brother had. Now that i think about it, that fucker had everything, when we were kids. The Atari with the gun you shoot at the TV with, the Disco light. Fuck that.
Loved this lamp, but the fiber optic lamp is über slut.

Oh MK, you bring back memories of spending time at the mall with my mom shopping for clothes and me at Spencer gifts! If I wasn't there, I was in Walden books checking out 'The Joy of Sex', lol!
You'll pry my lava lamp from my cold dead hands
Tesla has been my hero since adolescence but the guy had issues
He was probably severely manic depressive / bi-polar or something
I don't know if this was what prompted him to trust the wrong people and not get contracts before doing work for Edison which allowed Edison to just take some of his inventions
He worked on handshake deals or just verbal contracts
The guy changed the world no doubt
To bad he isn't around today

When I was in high school my friends and I went to a "college party." Random guy wanted to take me on a tour of the house. When we got to his room the lights were dimmed and the plasma globe was lit up in all it's glory. He said " I know you want to touch it"
------
College guys - the paragons of smoooooth, lol!
My 18 y.o. son received one as a gift from my mom circa 1998. It's still in his room on a dresser and has been plugged in maybe 5 times. Sentimental value in it now (mom died in 2009).

I saw an article about the effort to save the building last week. I wish they had left the tower. How cool would that be?

At the rate the funding is climbing, they may have enough money to rebuild the tower :D
YES! I totally suggested you make this thing a Hot Slut back when you made the pin press toy thing a Hot Slut, so my wishes have been fulfilled. I'm ecSTATIC. Get it? Hah.

Agree with everything you said about Tesla. The man, in my opinion, was the very definition of a true visionary inventor and thinker.

I was a student employee in the same group he worked in at an engineering firm near MIT. He had prototypes of the ball, plus rectangular tubes, in his office. He said he was going to start a business. I couldn't understand why he would quit a nice job to sell a few balls to fellow nerds. OH I AM ASTUPID!!!
Just my little brush with fame!
Also a little plug for the Indiegogo campaign to purchase Tesla's former lab and turn it into a musem:

Tesla came up with everything Edison did only he did it first. Edison got all the credit. In 1902 Tesla predicted that one day we would be able to transmit information and pictures through what we now call WiFi. He knew this planet is not renewable and he was green before anyone ever even considered that word. He died broke and in disgrace. He should have been rich and famous and happy because his ideas, co-opted by Edison and others, would have made this world a whole lot better place to live in. He did so much of the work and got very little credit.

I worked at Spencer's in the mid 90s! LOL The world had moved on from plasma balls and was on to lava lamps at the time. At Christmas we couldn't even keep them in stock.
Also popular were the wave machines. We had this huge one that was around $350. There had been some financial book out telling people to negotiate with retail stores to get better deals. So some guy offered us $100 for it. When we said no, he got enraged and demanded to speak to a manager on duty (me). When I still told him no, he was left in a huff and vowed never to buy anything from Spencer's again and that he would tell all his friends what a horrible store we were. Um...okay, then I wish you good luck on getting your black light poster needs met elsewhere.
I did a book report on Tesla in the 3rd or 4th grade. He was intersting and lived in my hometown of Colorado Springs. Love those plasma balls.
