The Cube from the late 80s, early 90s syndicated TV magnum opus that was Out of This World.
I think about Out of This World almost daily. Some people think about the devastation in Syria, others think about the economy crumbling into roach food and I think about Out of This World. I also think about how hot Steve Burton was in 1987. Yes, my brain is a quiz from Bop Magazine. I probably think about Out of This World all the time, because my dog's name is Elvie (Side note: When I gave my dog that name, I was like 21 years old, so my brain wasn't as developed as it is now. "Your brain isn't developed at all." - you "Good point." - me) and the main girl on the show was named Evie. Elvie, Evie, see! Sometimes when I'm drunk, I wish I would've named him "Evie" instead of "Elvie," because then when we play Out of This World and I put his paws together to stop time, it'd be way more believable.
Anyway, on the show there was this cube called The Cube. Evie's dad was an alien named Troy and he lived far away on a planet called Antareus. (Yes, that's straight out of the first chapter of Dianetics.) Evie could talk to her daddy almost anytime she wanted using The Cube. It was basically an earth-to-space phone that only she and her mom Donna could use to talk to Troy on his planet. Wiki gets more into it:
Evie is able to communicate with Troy through a special "genetic" communication device known as the "cube", which he gave to her when she turned thirteen. The cube effectively functions as a telephone line to Antareus — it can even be used to leave Troy an "answerphone" message, as seen in the episode "My Little Evie". There are no controls on the cube; Evie simply calls for her father and the cube activates when he answers, deactivating when he "hangs up". Sometimes when Troy uses his powers whilst talking through the cube, a beam of energy is emitted directly from the cube.
It opened on its own and sometimes it glowed!!!! The special effects and technology used to power The Cube put Avatar and EVERY Apple product to shame. If Out of this World took place today, Evie totally would've sold The Cube on eBay to buy bath salts and an iPad.

I havent been thinking about this show for YEARS because I thought it was cancelled almost immediately, and all I could remember was that the girl could freeze time and used that ability to cheat in school on the pop quizzes, she froze time, did the math, and then turned it in before most kids could even get to their seat.. Yaassss! This was my show! I too think about it more often than is totally healthy. I loved the episode where she had two dates and had to keep freezing time and changing.
I have no memory of this whatsoever. I remember every nuance of Small Wonder and It's a Living, but I don't think I ever caught this one. How did that happen?!
