At Least 12 Dead After A Shooting At A Showing Of The Dark Knight Rises (UPDATES)

Well, here's some scary, terrible, horrific, fucked up shit for a Friday morning. During a midnight showing of The Dark Knight Rises at the Century 16 movie theater in Aurora, Colorado, a 24-year-old crazy kicked open the emergency exit door and opened fire on everyone inside. Yeah, I'll pause as you trade your cup of morning liquid caffeine for a bottle of something brain-numbing.

Witnesses tell The Denver Post that the gunman was wearing camo all-black, a riot helmet on his head, a gas mask on his face and a bullet-proof vest. When he busted into the theater, he threw some kind of canister, which started hissing and spitting out some kind of gas. That's when he started shooting. I don't know if he timed it or it was just a tragic coincidence, but he started shooting during a shootout scene early in the movie. One witness said that many people thought the gun shots were coming from the movie and one thought that the smoke was some kind of special effect. When they realized what was going on, they ran for the doors.

So far, 12 people are confirmed dead (there are reports that 14 are dead) and 50 71 are wounded. A witness told Matt Lauer on Today this morning that she believes several children were shot.

The shooter, who has been ID'ed as 24-year-old James Holmes, didn't kill himself, which surprised me. He also didn't put up a fight when cops arrested him and grabbed his shot gun, a hand gun and an AK rifle. Police found a third gun inside of the theater. His apartment building in North Aurora was evacuated after he told police that there were explosives in his apartment. Police believe the shooter acted alone.

Here's cell phone video taken outside of the theater right after the shooting:

UPDATE: ABC News is real quick, because they have already contacted the maniac's mother in San Diego. She hasn't been contacted by police yet, didn't know of the shooting before ABC News told her and she also wasn't at all surprised. She only said, “You have the right person. I need to fly out to Colorado."

UPDATE II: The Paris premiere has been canceled. Also, Reddit has a detailed timeline of the events. It basically translates into: the world is fucked.

UPDATE III: Aaaaand here's a picture of the shooter.

Well, it makes a little more sense to bring a newborn to a theater than a 6 year old. Newborns sleep all the time and can snooze away in a baby bjorn. Would *I*? No. But I almost get it. They're so portable at that age.

A 6 year old should be in bed and shouldn't be watching violent movies like this anyway. My 6 year old wouldn't be able to stay awake that long! And would be crabby as fuck the next day. Not worth it.

It's a huge treat for my kids to be out past 7:00 at night. The city at night is magic to them. Maybe I'm old fashioned but I think it's trashy/ghetto to be dragging little kids around at night. Get a sitter or don't go. It's no fun for anyone.
----------------------------------------

So true Hekki. Living in DC you take your chances going to a movie. Babies, kids bouncing around, it's terrible. I almost got into it with a family at the Avengers movie, having conversations like they're at home in their living room and shit.

Heard a report they're checking this guy's name against a Jim Holmes who joined the Tea Party last year. Would not be surprised.

The governments and press should really handle cases like this by not making the identity of the person who did this public and by not letting their family or friends, or worst of all themselves speak. Execute them, or lock them away for life and that's it. Maybe this "trend" will stop then.
__________________________
Absolutely agree that shooters should not be identified by name, and no one around them should be allowed to speak unless it's to apologize (anonymously) to the victims families.

Prison authorities need to leave this POS alone and naked in isolation for 24/7 with nothing but a bed sheet. The problem should be solved within 6 months.

Holy shit, Batman! That is terrible! It hurts my heart. I feel so sorry for the victims and the people of the town. We had a school shooting here back in the 90s and the survivors, including the people of our town, are still healing from it. My empathy to those affected. Bless their hearts. I wonder what the shooter's motive was.

I suppose we are all going to have to go through TSA like security for movies now. How did that fucker get in the back door? Negligence on the part of the theater staff?

You know...guns don't commit crimes: people do. I know it's a retarded saying but it's true. It's not the guns in this country - that's not the problem. A psycho who wants to commit a crime is GOING to get a gun. I believe at times that our own government would hand them that gun, figuratively or literally. Watch "the Columbine Cause". It's basically just a slideshow of documents, but watch it. The whole thing is on YouTube. I really implore everyone here to check it out. It's not a crazy conspiracy theory.

America has a problem with guns because there are so many people who are mentally and spiritually depraved. Normal people don't just grab a gun and think "Ya know what? I'm gonna kill a shit ton of people today".

I don't know what's worse - predators being able to walk in a store and buy a gun, or innocent people no longer being allowed to own a gun for protection from the psychos.

britmachine's picture

An actual shooting during a shooting scene in the movie is kinda like the opening scene of Scream 2 with Jada Pinkett-Smith. She gets literally stabbed during the movie Stab. It's on Netflix. Maybe this huge NERD was watching it one night and got a nerd boner over it and decided he'd be an actual super villain and shoot up the DKR showing. NERDS/FANBOYS stop taking this comic shit so seriously. Christ.

First off... I personally don't think kids should be out that late either, BUT once again, NOT THE FUCKING ISSUE HERE.

*********

Oh, it's not the issue because YOU decided it's not really the issue? GTFO. So slam on someone b/c they express an opinion about a 6 yr old being at a midnight movie? Didnt know you were in control of the conversation on this thread. And for the record, it may not be a huge issue, but it does raise concern especially when they were almost knocked off. So seriously, maybe you're the one that needs to STFU with all your spewing about testicles and your theories on how he should be punished. Do we live in a 3rd world country now? WTF is wrong with you?
_____

I'm done after this. It's like trying to argue with a retarded brick wall.

It just shows what kind of person you are to try to put ANY kind of blame on these innocent people.
These people took their kids to a MOVIE THEATER. They didn't take them to a crack house or any other dangerous place/event.
It was a GD movie theater.. at a late hour? Yes, but who the hell cares!
It wasn't the VICTIMS faults that some psycho maniac decided to shoot up the place and it wasn't the VICTIMS faults for bringing their children along.

This crazy psycho could've shot up the place in the afternoon where I'm sure even more children would've been in attendance and I'm sure assholes like you would've brought up that they shouldn't have been in an R rated movie, once again trying to blame the innocent victims in this shitstorm.

You're like the idiots that try to blame the woman for getting raped b/c she was wearing something sexy.

Absolutely chilling and as more eyewitnesses start talking, I think it will prove to only be the tip of the iceberg. I can't even imagine that kind of terror.

**************************************
If I see something I haven't seen before, I'll throw a dollar at it.

I don't care about kids sleeping habits, but I do care if the movie is appropriate for a six year old. My son still hasn't seen the Batman with Heath Ledger. Batman has become dark. Get a babysitter. It's not like the kid wanted to see it because of Disney product Anne Hathaway was in it and seemed fun.

Deb's picture

Recently in Chicago, a 7 year old girl named Heaven was caught in gang gunfire around 11:00 pm at the candy stand that her mom had set up (to keep the kids out of trouble) in their bad neighborhood.
While it is terribly sad, I didn't get the logic of a 7 year old (or any young kids) being out on a dodgy neighborhood street at that hour. And the poor thing's mother seemed more about her own 15 mins. of fame than grief over her daughter. And yes, people grieve differently, but that's my take.
I guess my point is that gun violence is everywhere.

"JUST SMILE LIKE A NORMAL FUCKED UP PERSON."

These last few generations are on total overload and cannot deal with how things are today. Too much, too fast. People say how things were in the past is outdated; but really, in simplier times where one person wasn't doing ten jobs in one, no constant plug-in to everything electronic and information overload didn't have this effect. Of course, mass murder happened but not on this going-out-in-glory stuff that they bank on being on every facebook, twitter, blog and newspaper heading. Everyone wants their grief and despair out for the world to see and their 15 minutes of fame.

What a world this has become.

louise_brooks's picture

From the ABC news story:

A man who talked to a couple who was inside the theater told ABC News, "They got up and they started to run through the emergency exit, and that when she turned around, she said all she saw was the guy slowly making his way up the stairs and just firing at people, just picking random people."

This is beyond words terrifying.

Fifi La Rue's picture

Such horribly sad news! My heart goes out to the victims and their family and friends :(

I think of my son, my stepdaughter, and my stepdaughter's boyfriend who went to see this movie at the midnight showing (thank god not in Colorado)and my heart bleeds for those families who have lost loved ones. All those people wanted was a fun night at the movies. They didn't deserve the hell they received.
And seriously, what the fuck is up with people? They should just tear this guy apart bit by bit, make him feel the agony that those families will live with for the rest of their lives.

Ditquoi, I hear you re the long afternoon naps and they're being awake later at night. It's just that, to me, there's a difference between having your young children awake late at home vs carting them around the city late at night, and to a late night film screening, to boot.

can't really argue with that. we don't live in the city, but if we are in the city past 8 PM, we're usually in the process of driving out of it and he's in his carseat sleeping.

I understand that infants are much more portable and agreeable than toddlers but movies these days are really noisy...how would any infant sleep through that, unless you're giving them Benadryl before that?

to be honest, my son is up late because he takes a long nap in the evening 4 - 8. I like it like that because it gives me a chance to relax after a full day of work, and allows me to be calm and relaxed when we have dinner and spend quality time. he's not just "up" for shits and giggles. so just be careful with that judgey stuff, it may be misplaced. anyway, he's growing out of the napping stage. he's still a night owl, because I'm a night owl.

Unfortunately, there isn't much you can do if the disturbed person doesn't want to get help and is over 18.

Bjork You's picture

I agree about judging a child's sleeping hours. But that happens a lot here on dlisted, judgments about where and how children live, from how they are dressed to where they live to their bedtime.

I have seen women in theatres with their babies at different hours. The babies who I have seen have slept through the movie, and then nursed at their mom's breast or sucked on a bottle. There were times I was not even aware of a baby in the theatre. And considerate ones tend to remove their kids if they get ornery. (But I did see a young couple bring in their kid, about 4 to 6?, to a screening of "The Exorcist." I complained to the manager, and he told me that as long as the minor is accompanied by an adult, there was nothing that he could do. I didn't know that the father was standing behind me during my "Well, upon my word" lament. Anyway, they were behind me in the theatre, and I turned and glared at them during the scene where Erin stabs herself in the vadge with a crucifix. The mother was covering the kid's eyes, but what the fuck, he had already heard the devil spewing obscenities.)

I think that if there is any judgment, it should be on a system that allows such easy access to weapons. He might still have gone in to a public place with the intent to harm, but I don't think that he would have been able to harm as many people, even kill any, if he had only a baseball bat.

IsoldeMae's picture

I heard that the shooter's mother was not at all surprised by what her son did. When she was informed, she said "Yeah, you got the right guy."

Any takers on whether or not this is a white guy? I bet it is. It's always these fucking white American males with their white male privilege who do shit like this. They think their anger justifies what they do, that they somehow hold that right to take lives. Fucking surprised he didn't kill himself, as that's what these cowards tend to do. Glad he didn't, now he will have to face the full truth of what his actions have done.

And it's just as sad to me that so many Americans will continue to fight for our right to own guns even though if these assholes couldn't get guns this shit wouldn't happen as often. They'd be left alone to masturbate out their petty male aggression.

And also - the retardation of there being a 3 month old baby. If that's true - who gives a fuck? Who really gives a flying fuck, honestly? 14 people are dead, 50 are injured. I can't believe that would even register on someone's radar right now in that situation.
