At Least 12 Dead After A Shooting At A Showing Of The Dark Knight Rises (UPDATES)
Well, here's some scary, terrible, horrific, fucked up shit for a Friday morning. During a midnight showing of The Dark Knight Rises at the Century 16 movie theater in Aurora, Colorado, a 24-year-old crazy kicked open the emergency exit door and opened fire on everyone inside. Yeah, I'll pause as you trade your cup of morning liquid caffeine for a bottle of something brain-numbing.
Witnesses tell The Denver Post that the gunman was wearing camo all-black, a riot helmet on his head, a gas mask on his face and a bullet-proof vest. When he busted into the theater, he threw some kind of canister, which started hissing and spitting out some kind of gas. That's when he started shooting. I don't know if he timed it or it was just a tragic coincidence, but he started shooting during a shootout scene early in the movie. One witness said that many people thought the gun shots were coming from the movie and one thought that the smoke was some kind of special effect. When they realized what was going on, they ran for the doors.
So far, 12 people are confirmed dead (there are reports that 14 are dead) and 50 71 are wounded. A witness told Matt Lauer on Today this morning that she believes several children were shot.
The shooter, who has been ID'ed as 24-year-old James Holmes, didn't kill himself, which surprised me. He also didn't put up a fight when cops arrested him and grabbed his shot gun, a hand gun and an AK rifle. Police found a third gun inside of the theater. His apartment building in North Aurora was evacuated after he told police that there were explosives in his apartment. Police believe the shooter acted alone.
Here's cell phone video taken outside of the theater right after the shooting:
UPDATE: ABC News is real quick, because they have already contacted the maniac's mother in San Diego. She hasn't been contacted by police yet, didn't know of the shooting before ABC News told her and she also wasn't at all surprised. She only said, “You have the right person. I need to fly out to Colorado."
UPDATE II: The Paris premiere has been canceled. Also, Reddit has a detailed timeline of the events. It basically translates into: the world is fucked.
UPDATE III: Aaaaand here's a picture of the shooter.

Its sad you have to worry about these things today I went to a concert few months ago & I don't know if it was that the band I saw is big on their political stance & it was a large crowd/venue but I started getting anxious thinking WHAT IF someone started shooting up the show.Can't be at ease anywhere anymore.
This is so awful! Imagine the people living next to this idiot with all those explosive lying around! I feel terrible for the victims and their families! ;(

I think I am one of the few who would like to know WHY he did it and not want to execute him on the spot or call him the devil. We need to know why people go off like this and how can we prevent it. We all have free will but what makes someone do this... we need to know. I live in the state of Arizona where guns come a dime a dozen and I've never been happy about that. I'm all for gun control and am as far left of center as they come.

Is that really true about the baby's father taking off?
What the hell?
There is no reason for a civilian to be able to legally carry an AR-15 a semi automatic rifle that can shoot hundreds of rounds per minute. Deer hunting? My ass.
Hopefully, this will be the "wake-up call" that America needs to finally implement some serious form of gun control, like Australia did (successfully!) a decade ago.
Let's hope this terrible event won't be in vain.
I love you guys.

In Colorado for work and we took a stand. We went to see the movie. God Bless and be with the victims and families touched by this tragedy, for sure, but we can't let ourselves be paralyzed by fear because of one despicable person who should rot in hell.
Close a premiere due to fear? Hell no. Go.

Yep... Our "Father of the year" left the building and took off after leaving the baby on the floor to die!!! I cannot even fathom what the hell was he thinking when he decided to leave his family behind amidst all that shooting!
I'm a parent, and as a parent, your first instinct is to protect your child rather than yourself. I know people will say that circumstances were different and maybe he was in shock or whatever... but i DO NOT believe that as an excuse. How can you leave your baby behind like that???
The woman said she called him from the theater afterwards and that's when he turned his car around! So generous of him... pfft.
On another note.... what a terrible terrible tragedy. I've always believed human beings are the worst! There is no humanity left in the world.
Sorry for the rant. I'm just too disturbed by this incident.

Mel-Tang - I live in fear of being shot in traffic. No longer are the days you can honk your horn and flip off an asshole driver muttering FUCK YOU and drive angrily off. Nope, now you get shot here.
You also get shot if you cut someone off.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
@ M.E. - Your fear of getting shot at while driving is quite valid. That happened to me. I live in Los Angeles and while driving on the freeway, on a Saturday morning (9am), some POS shot at my car. I'd done nothing to provoke it and saw nothing, only felt the glass as it shattered showered me. CHP said had I been going a fraction of a mile slower - shotgun blast would've taken my head. Random L.A. shooting.
And I had some stupid ass homeboy pull a gun on me and a close friend because he thought we honked at him. He stopped his car, walked back to ours, pulled his gun and told us he was going to shoot us for disrespecting him. Just like that. I told him the horn in the old beater we were driving did not work. He reached in, tried the horn, realized it did not work - and then apologized to us. I hope the piece of shit loser is now dead. That was 22 years ago, when I was all of 21. Oh, did I mention that having grown up in just about every ghetto in L.A. I have no respect for "homies"? Biggest fucking cowards I've ever met...
So anyhow, your fear is not unfounded. Live and let live and hope others let your live life to the fullest.
My sincere condolences to all the families & friends of the victims of this tragedy.
@Libra: Noooooooooo way! What a POS. HE TOOK OFF??? Real father of the year material there. I just saw the mother on TV, holding the baby and saw that not only did she bring a 4mo old baby, but also her 4yo daughter too.
When I was 4mo I didn't go anywhere but the crib, and at 4yo, the latest I got to stay up was 9pm once a year on Xmas Eve, to put out cookies for Santa and carrots for the reindeer. Out to a R rated shoot-em up movie at midnight? HA! Never in a million years.
I'm glad you said that in the last paragraph. I used to try and take a humanistic approach, believing that humans are inherently good, but as I grew up, I realized humans are evil, most of us are just civilized now. If you look at history, humans have enjoyed watching people die. Look at the Romans and Greeks watching someone eaten alive by a lion, or something as simple and recent as people watching a hanging. Who would want to watch that!?
You and I think alike in regard to Batman. I must be old, too, because I, too, miss the Tim Burton Batmans, lol (I turn 30 next Friday). I think there is just something off with Nolan's vision. While I think Heath Ledger's Joker was more twisted and grimy, I thought he was better than Jack, but then again, Jack's was more Joker-like because he didn't act like a thug like Heath's Joker did. Either way, other then Heath Ledger, I've found Nolan's movies so boring that all I want is for the credits to hurry and roll.
As the mother of a child who suffers with mental illness, I feel badly for the family of this person. And, my heart just hurts for the victims. I have family and friends in Aurora. None of them (so far) were there or injured, but a few have talked about just recently being at that theater. It affects us all. Back in the mid 80s, a gunman in Colorado Springs shot and killed 5 people--one of them was my friend and classmate. A few years later, my former best friend's brother shot and killed their mother--again in Colorado Springs. These were such shocking crimes that just devastated the community. It's becoming commonplace now.
None of us have the answers because there aren't any clear cut ones. Gun control isn't going to stop people from going on a shootng spree. Forcing people to take their meds isn't going to stop someone from murdering.
It is just the world we live in. We as people like to point the finger at the monster, but we don't realize that the monster lies within all of us. I'm sorry, but deep down, humans are selfish, murderous beasts. All you can do is live your life.
My surmise, based on just her words and nothing more, is she knew her son was a nutjob. Yeah, bi-polar can come on at around that age, but there are clues from childhood--or at least clues building up to the breakdown.
have any reports clarified the meaning of what the mom said -- i.e. did she mean "yes you have the right person, i am the mother of x" or did she mean "yes, you arrested the right person"?
Wow. This guy is sick. This is why we need new laws that give families of people who are obviously mentally ill more power to force them into treatment. His mother almost seemed to expect something like this. The pendulum has swung to far the other way from Frances Farmer's day...
______________________________________________
This. Spot fucking on. It's wonderful that the mentally ill are no longer being involuntarily held in warehouses, and that they can function reasonably well in society with proper treatment and medication. It is unconscionable that a person who is clearly a danger to himself and others must act and do something horrendously violent before being committed. And even in those cases, a lot of times the docs must get the patient's consent before administering medication. I mean, where do you draw the line?
The pendulum has swung way too far in the other direction, IMO. I'm all for giving people autonomy of their bodies and their health, but that ends when you become a danger to me as the result of your unmedicated illness. And I say this as someone who has suffered from a severe mental illness, but who--with medication and talk therapy--was able to become not only a functioning but thriving member of society (okay, that's up for debate).
The mom has been quoted as saying, you have the right person. She knew it was her kid and SHE reached out to police.
Interestingly enough, the car in front of the parents house has a mental health organizations' sticker on their rear window. It is a support netowrk for those dealing with mental illness in their families.
It appears that although not complict (my bad on the wording there, non native speaker and all) she was aware her son had significant issues.
Bad shit ALWAYS involving/surrounding this movie. It's really twisted and sadistic, it's like to be expected now that something evil or bad will happen when a new Batman movie comes out. I'm not one of those people who blame movies for glorifying this stuff because people need to realize it's just entertainment but this Batman franchise is so fucked up. It's so plagued by accidents and awful incidents. Dabble into dark shit-make believe or not and dark shit is bound to happen I guess. A lot of other movies are said to be "cursed" too. I also think it's more to this story-we will probably never get the full details. Distraction?
@Andrei, I totally agree with you. I was saying earlier that I also got a bad feeling when I first saw the trailer. It was just too sadistic to me, and seemed to glamorize the fucked up violence and terrorism that we see in real life. I also don't like Nolan's vision of Batman, though I can see why it's critically lauded (personally I have found them boring and depressing). I must already be an old fart because I miss Tim Burton's gothic, romantic version of Batman. His visions of the Joker and Catwoman seem so innocent now, sigh...
It's American filmmakers that are so fucking obsessed with guns and violence. I grew up in Europe to European parents and was not allowed to watch anything violent. My parents had no such qualms about letting us view nudity, but violence is where they drew the line. In the U.S. it's all backwards. God forbid a kid sees a bare tit on tv, but it's perfectly normal to show people getting stabbed, shot, dismembered in the worst ways.
I am NOT blaming the film here. I am blaming only one person, the shooter. But Americans are a people very tolerent of violence, at least on television and in films.
when I found out this shooting was during The Dark Knight, I got chills because I had bad fucking vibes when I first saw the trailer. when I saw that trailer I was really afraid some sick fucks were going to try to recreate those terrorizing acts.
Really? I just thought the trailer was shit.
To M.E. : According to MK (via ABC), the mother did not seem at all shocked/surprised to hear her son was involved. So, I assumed she knew that all was not right with her kid.
Edit #2: To Lucifer: I felt like the trailer had a bad vibe. Like, there seemed to be this very flat vibe to it. A flat, matter-of-fact, mentally sick vibe. It was very banal, and it felt pretty f*@ng depressing.
